Thank you for you help. As you will probably discover, I have made a chaotic mess while trying to solve my problem.

Here are screen shots of my external drive and of my import screen

OK. Your "Destination" in the import dialog says "Copy into Catalog". That means the files have been stored inside the catalog folder structure. When stored inside the catalog you cannot "rearrange" the folder structure. Capture One has complete control. What you can do is move them USING Capture One into folders outside of the catalog folder structure.

First you need to think about how you want your folder structure organized. Once you decide on a folder structure you can begin to "add" folders to the Folders tool in the Library tab.

    1. Go to the Capture One Folders tool in the Library tab.
    2. Click "+" to add a folder outside the catalog.
    3. Then drag-n-drop a desired selection of thumbnails onto that folder.

I recommend creating one parent folder that will hold all your referenced images, and create subfolders inside that parent that represent your photo tree organization.

    I am totally confused.

I found this tutorial written by Jan Gonzales (https://www.captureone.com/blog/replicating-lr-importing-workflow) in which he describes importing images into C1, "On the Import To, choose where you would like the files to be saved. In my case, I have it on a separate drive which has a folder named on a per year basis (e.g. 2018).". In his tutorial he shows his import window which bares little resemblance to my import window.

That article is dated. The importer has changed since then. Your imported screenshot looks perfectly fine.

Thank you, that is one less problem to work on.

Are there a set of simple instructions that I could follow to get this thing working again? The way it is now, since I cannot easily get my images into C1 it has lost a lot of utility.

Make sure Capture One has folder and file permissions for your drive. Look in Sys Settings > Security and Privacy.

I think that C1 has access to files and folders

That might be your issue. Capture One 22 officially only supports up to macOS 13.0.1.

I have been diagnosing the problem and I have identified what is going wrong but I have no idea how to correct it.

I am using C1 v22 on an iMac (OS 14.4.1). I have my images stored on an external 2TB drive labeled as C1_images.  Here is a screen shot of C1_images

Notice that all of my earlier catalogs are labeled “Capture One 2016”, “Capture One 2017” etc. The folder labeled “unidentified folder” in Capture One 2023  actually is a set of 2024 images that was mis-filed into the 2023 catalog.  Also notice that in 2024 my catalog is labeled, “CaptureOne 2024.cocatalog”. This label was not intended, but resulted when I attempted to create a catalog for my 2024 images.

I opened “New Catalog” and typed in Capture One 2024 and it ended up as “CaptureOne 2024.cocatalog” and I am unable to import images into this  catalog.

    1. If the catalog has nothing in it yet, presumably you could delete it and create a new one, with the correct name.
    2. If it is on an external drive, have you made sure that Capture One has the necessary permissions (set in System Settings) to access that drive?
    3. Capture One Pro (release 16.3.8) officially supports macOS Sonoma 14.4, but earlier versions don't. It may be that your problem arises from using Capture One 22 on an OS version that it doesn't support. (Something that you MAY get away with, but equally you may not.)

My version of C1 is 16.4.3.4.

    I don't think there is a 16.4.3.4 - the current version is 16.3.8

I assumed you were on Capture One 22, because this is the version 22 area of the forum.

Thank you Ian. I am using 15.4.3.4, I guess I need new glasses.

So it could be that running it on Sonoma 14.4.1 is the problem, then. Could you consider upgrading Capture One to the newest version?
