    1) you can have multiple catalogs open at any time
    2) you can use the Aperature catalog importer in CO, and see for your self.
    3) Depending on whether or not the files are referenced or managed, you catalog-size may vary
    4) A full number increase will always be paid (like 8 -> 9). But all release within a number will always be free (like 9.0 -> 9.3). You can also look into the subscription model instead, where you pay a monthly fee instead, and will always access to the newest version, regardless of version-numbers.

40,000 images in a catalog seems to be the point where things really start to go pear-shaped (searching, tagging, scrolling, etc.). 20,000 is about the limit for where it still feels ok. This is with the catalog on an SSD, which improves loading times, but it's nowhere near as good as Aperture in that respect. I have separate catalogs per year, and in the fall when they go past the 20,000 mark is where I feel things starting to bog down, but they're still plenty usable even if the trend is not looking good. Everything I've heard suggests that the 40,000+ and especially 100,000+ catalogs become total dumpster fires and are best split up.
