C1 4.1 - Forced to import?
Hmm ... maybe i'm missing something.
Why am i forced to import files, that are already on my harddrive? If i open such folder on my drive, the files inside are marked "read only" (eye-symbol) and cannot be edited.
(No, the files are not marked as "read only" in the OS, only in C1!)
If i import those files from the folders to the c1 library, all things are fine. But importing means copying, what i do not want, because i dont like copies of already existing files. I already have backups of them, i don't need another.
Am i doing something wrong? I just want to edit the files at their current location without beeing forced to copy them.

Check again for the read-only flag. Either the files or the folder has it set. Did you copy them from a CD/DVD in the past? 0 -
raw or jpg-files?
jpg files are not editable...0 -
Neither the files nor the folder are set as "read only" outside of C1 4.1. Only within C1 they are flaged. The files are RAWs from a Canon 30D, imported to their folder from the CF-card with another software.
Even older files, which i already edited with C1 4.0 have the read-only flag, if i try to open them in their current folder. To be able to edit them, I am forced to import them to the library, too.

Plz have a look at the screenshot. The files are not read-only outside of C1! With any other program i can edit them also. Only within c1 they're flaged and i'm forced to import, eg. copy them!0 -

What happens if you do not use any download program to move files to your hard drive? ( just drag and drop them into a folder ) Can you then get proper access to them?0 -

No, i can't. Just the same. Direct copy from cardreader to harddrive. As you can see in the screenshot, in the explorer the file is not read only, but in C1 it is.

We are looking in the wrong place. I think only John Nevill is giving the right hint here. The permissions CO4 shows (Schreibgeschützt or write protected, not read-only) in your computer is not related to the read-only bit of file or folder. It is related to file or folder permissions a.k.a. NTFS permissions assuming your drive is NTFS formatted or something else. But WHAT?
I ran some tests but was not able to duplicate your setup. I experimented with setting the read-only bit both on file and folder level. Permissions in CO4 (Quick tab) remained All. A read-only attribute raw file results in CO4 as not being able to set any adjustment (like a JPEG file) and the eye-symbol.
I also experimented with limited or zero permissions. With very limited permissions CO4 still functions normal. Without any permission for the user to the images folder CO4 comes with a pop-up and allows to repair the permissions (which gave me an idea of what CO4 needs to function). In all cases, the permissions displayed in the Quick tab remains All.
I used Vista SP1 and a non-administrative account for the tests. I am lost and suggest you open a support case with Phase One.0 -

Thanks to Paul and all other, who tried to help me, also.
Moving one step deeper in folder-hierarchy did the trick. That's a bug(?),i can live with. One only has to know.

Maybe, it's because i redirected "My Pictures" directly to F:\\ ?

I think it has something to do with Vista's User Account Control function and NTFS. I've completely ripped UAC out as its a PITA. Switching it off doesn't seen to cure it either.0 -

Here on my PC UAC is also turned off completely.0 -
Updating Vista to Service Pack 1 really helps to lessen the irritation UAC is giving the user. Consider to switch on UAC again after SP1. 0 -
I just would like to inform you, that the issue no longer exists with C1 4.5. No more need to go one step deeper in folder-hierarchy. Now it works fine even with pics in the root-directory. 😊 0
