MacBook Pro upgrade but C1 is running slower
I got myself a new Mac (Mid-2015, 2,8 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon R9 M370X) to upgrade my previous one (late 2011, 2,2 GHz i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon 6750M). Capture One 20 Pro was running smoothly on the old one, this was not the reason for the upgrade, but mainly the Retina display. I restored the new MBP out of a backup of the old one, so everything was just like on the old one. When I first edited pictures on the new MBP, I realized that it worked slower than on the old one! I realized this pretty quickly while browsing through the RAW pictures and also in the 'clarity' control, I couldn't make changes in real-time without the spinning loading wheel to appear. Of course I set the preview size higher because of the Retina display but I don't think that this could be the reason.
Any ideas?

Ok, you increased the preview size. But did you also generate new previews? If not, you are still using the old previews which might not be large enough for the new display...

In addition to Ralf's observation it may be worth considering the comments in this article - especially the "Note:" at the bottom of the article discussing high resolution monitors.

Yes of course, I did change the preview size prior to my first editing and also after trying different sizes.
So basically due to the higher resolution of the Retina screen the overall performance might be worse than on my old system?

You can reduce the resolution of your Retina display to see what difference it makes.
Go to system preferences then display then press alt and click scaled.
Tick the low resolution box and choose a mode labelled low resolution.
For example on my 27 inch iMac I use 2560x1440 low resolution
You lose the Retina mode but Retain the wide colour gamut.

Capture One doesnt like Retina displays of iMac's, I have late 2015 model, since day 1 having speed issues (v8 or v9) The support team always blamed my GPU card as it is not strong enough to run CO, although it was perfectly OK to edit 4K videos

Changing the preview size is not enough : as emphasized by Ralf, Capture One needs to regenerate each preview you are processing when needed (i.e. from the old smaller size to the new larger one), and this takes some time.

@David Good hint! Weird enough an even higher resolution worked!!
Here's what I did: I was on the highest resolution that I could set in the system's display settings, the one that says 'looks like 1920x1200'. I then changed the resolution with the tool Display Menu to a resolution of 2048x1280 and C1 worked like a charm again. Apparently this is a non-Retina resolution though.

Thats great news Andreas.
It seems that in standard Retina mode the display appears to Capture One as 5120x2880 pixels. Thats 14.7Mpx.
and takes a lot of processing.
Even Apple does not use 5120x2260 directly as it would make everything on the screen too small. In Retina mode it actually uses 2560x1440 resolution but renders each of those pixels as a 2x2 grid which produces a beautifully smooth display of text.
If we select a resolution of 2560x1440, then although that is only 3.7Mpx, the display still appears to the application as
14.7 Mpx display.
I can't think why anyone would want to do this.
If however we set the resolution to 2560x1440(low resolution) then the display functions at that resolution and C1 has much less work to do

Another point of view....
Ever zoom into an image to see it at 100% when editing? I do. With the screen configuration I use my viewport is about 4300x2600 pixels. Using a reduced resolution would cut that by a factor of 4 to 2150x1300 pixels. That translates to more time needed to scroll around the image to see all parts.
I've been spending a lot of time recently scanning old family negatives. That means hours with the healing brush to get rid of dust spots and other imperfections found on negative that have been sitting in a box for 50 years. Looking at the image at 200% and still being able to see the context around the areas of imperfection helps a lot in that task. And less scrolling.
My Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019 iMac with the i9 processor is adequate for these tasks. Yes, performance could be a lot better, but that is on Capture One, not my machine. Other image editing software I've used does not show the performance issues that Capture One does.

I have not made myself clear.
I fully appreciate the benefits of a high resolution display and would love it if C1 could drive one using the more affordable macs.
What I was trying to emphasise is that if the performance at Retina resolution is not satisfactory, as has been commented on many times here, then probably the only available compromise is to reduce the display resolution.
If this choice is made then it is important to choose say 2560x1440 (low resolution) not 2560x1440.
If the latter is chosen then the display still looks like 5120x2880 to C1 but the screen looks like 2560
This would be the worst of both worlds and I can’t see any benefit in this mode.

Another option is actually to increase the display resolution. Sounds crazy, I know, but I found when I was running my macbook pro in retina mode, C1 was slow.
Using a free tool called RDM, I was able to increase the display resolution as none of the "retina" display modes don't use the max resolution of the display.
In my case, I went from (retina) 1680x1050 to 1920x1200 (non-retina) and C1 is much faster now.

Hello, problem is your GPU cant handle the 5k resolution. The only way how you can use the C1 is to switch to lower resolution. Go to finder and navigate to C1 aplication, get info and tick checkbox Run in low resulotion....you can send me botlle of beer , thx and have a nice day :)
edit, with this you can leave imac native retina resolution all the time so all other aps are running in the beatiful retina mode, just C1 is running in low resolution mode and you dont have to switch the whole screen resolution mode which affect everything

Sorry but no, its not because your GPU cannot handle 5k, it is because CO is terrible in utilizing GPU in iMacs.
Half of the adjustments use GPU, the other not and even the it uses, it does not use fully. You can see that by opening activity monitor GPU window. CPUs max out, GPU in mid use at most.
