You need to get your act together with the lens profiles
I recently upgraded to Capture One 20, excited to use it with my newly purchased Tamron 70-180mm 2.8 lens for my Sony camera.
I was severely disappointed to find out that the lens is not in the supported list at all. This led me down a rabbit hole of looking at all the 3rd party lens profiles that are missing for Capture One (at least for Sony).
Capture One is missing a lot of lens profiles.
If we take the Sigma lens lineup alone, Capture One currently only support 7 lenses (from https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002718318-Lens-profiles-support-in-Capture-One)
Compare that to Lightroom, where they support 191 Sigma lenses (https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/supported-lenses.html). Granted a number of those are variations of the same lenses for the different mounts, it's a staggering difference.
Taking my Tamron 70-180mm as an example, the lens has been out for since May 2020. That's a full 7 months since release and it's still missing from Capture One. In comparison, Lightroom Classic supported this lens in the 9.2.1 release, which was released in April - a full month before the lens release.
Let's break down more of the differences here:
Capture One
- 575 supported lenses
- $20 monthly subscription
Lightroom
- 1444 supported lenses
- $9.99 monthly subscription (comes with Photoshop)
That's slightly 40% of what Lightroom has!
I think it's a huge oversight that you guys are not keeping up to date with the new lens profiles for professional photographers.
You may argue "you can just manually define your lens profile," or "just use Lightroom then."
To the first point, it's more effort to have to do the necessary research for every potential lens that I'm going to purchase. It just adds more time that takes away from me being able to deliver on my images, plus my custom profile is never going to be the same as what the manufacturer intended. The point of software like Capture One is to streamline my workflow, not create more work for me.
To the second point, that is a serious consideration I'm making at present because I see no roadmap or plan from you guys on how to address this.
Please understand that I'm writing this because I love using Capture One.
I've used it for the last 3 years with my last 2 camera ecosystems and have grown to become very proficient with the software. Now I've just invested in my 3rd and I'm at a crossroads with the option to make a switch now before this becomes a more costly endeavor for me.
While I can make the costly switch to Lightroom, I don't want to if I can avoid it. This seems such a basic part of the value you should provide to photographers to better position yourself against a competitor like Lightroom. And judging by the multitude of forum posts about "Can we get this lens supported?" it seems like I am hardly alone.
Please take this more seriously. Form a team or dedicate resources to taking stock of existing lens profiles, and make a consistent plan for how to prepare for up and coming lenses as well for the sanity of your photographers.
I need to hear about how you guys plan to tackle this to provide confidence in your ability to support me as a photographer now, and in the future.

Just to add, I'm aware of this article:
https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002657537-Working-with-an-unlisted-lens-profileThe Tamron 70-180mm is still unsupported in that list, and so is the Tamron 17-28mm, Sigma 12-24mm f2.8 DN, Sigma 85mm 1.4 DN.
Basically anything that's been released in the last year for Sony.

Ryan,
Do you think that the Manufacturer profiles are so lacking that they can be easily improved upon?

I can only speak from a consumer's point-of-view and cannot and will not make an ignorant claim that I think this is an easy fix. I do not understand their company structure or how they've designed their software.
However, as I mentioned in my first post, Phase One needs to develop a plan to share with their audience on how they're going to improve with this for existing lenses and their plan going forward.
The mere fact that this forum is flooded by requests for it goes to show that I'm not alone in this.
As of writing this comment, 16 out of 27 posts on Feature Requests are about camera and lens support (excluding my post and the 2 sticky posts, which are ironically for Lens and Camera Support). That's nearly 60% of posts. This forum is called "Feature Requests" and should be filled with actual feature requests for improvements to the software, not "Lens/Camera Profile Requests", wouldn't you agree?
Lens and Camera profiles shouldn't be a "Feature" but a requirement, especially for a company whose entire business revolves around photography and is competing for market share from the likes of Lightroom.
Lightroom even supports lens profiles for Phones!
I don't want to have to worry about whether a lens or camera that I'm considering is supported by Capture One. That simply should not be on a photographer's mind at all.

Ryan,
thank you very much for doing the research and the clear statement. I could not agree more. Lens support is such a basic feature we normally don't even think about it, until one has purchased a new mainstream DSLR lens that is not supported. Suddenly the workstream is broken somewhat and a lot of manual intervention is needed. Even for people willing to spend some time on it, there is no way to create a custom lens profile or other automation to apply corrections efficiently when using zoom lenses.
Capture One, please give us a perspective! We are spending real money on your product and it is so disappointing to see such basic function actually getting worse... I think it is not too late to change and really hope for improvement.

No need to wait for it: "Unfortunately, we can’t comment on future developments but your request has been noted. We are constantly working on improving our product based on input from our community, so thank you for taking the time to provide us with your suggestions."

Phase One, I would really appreciate a response or some form of acknowledgement.

You're unlikely to get anything more than the above, unfortunately.
