Finally resolved the issue. Cleaned the registry of Capture one manually. Reset the 'Activation' number (from 0 to 1) on my Profile page after logging in to the Capture One web site.

I have now installed express but it will not activate saying I have two editions. The first is definitely uninstalled.

May be much too late now but could you try a System Restore? You obviously know computers so this may have been below your radar!
