Introduced in Capture One 16.5.0, Replace Background lets you easily change the background of your images using Photoroom API integration. It can also create a black and white JPEG image based on alpha channel, which can be used as a mask in external apps. As of Capture One 16.5.1, selecting the Transparent Background option allows you to save the file as a PNG with a transparent background.
With the release of Capture One 16.5.2, we introduced Expand Background and Replace Background on macOS and Windows.
We intend for this tool to benefit e-commerce and product photographers and their clients by achieving faster time to market and to ideate and visualise the end result with generated backgrounds.
Replace Background supports Batch Applying, processing each image individually to ensure the best fit for the background.
This feature is currently in beta to ensure proper functionality and user experience, especially under heavy usage.

About Photoroom Integration
We partnered with Photoroom to offer advanced background replacement capabilities, leveraging our combined expertise and technology to provide the best possible service to our users.
Capture One and Photoroom don't use your images to train AI and claim no ownership rights over the content you provide or create using Photoroom services. See Photoroom: Ownership of images.
You can process an unlimited number of photos per month with watermark if you're not a Photoroom subscriber. The number of images you can process without a watermark per month depends on your Photoroom subscription plan. See Photoroom: Pricing & Plans.

Below are a few key points from Photoroom: Frequently Asked Questions:
- When you are a paying user of Photoroom, regardless of your plan, you will have access to all the features implemented in Capture One. However, your usage will be affected by the features you use. For example, if you are subscribed to the Basic plan of Photoroom, which doesn't include AI shadow generation, and you decide to use AI shadow generation on an image, Photoroom will count this operation as if you had processed 5 images. Please refer to Photoroom's pricing page and documentation to learn more.
- It's possible to process several images in bulk. Photoroom API has a rate limiting of 500 images / minute (and can be increased for special use cases)
- Limiting images to 25 megapixels for optimal performance is recommended.
- Image Editing Maximum File Size: 30MB.
- We're applying a 5000px limit on the long edge because this is the maximum resolution for certain operations, such as generating backgrounds and shadows
- All APIs accept images in PNG, JPEG and WEBP format. Images in HEIC format are supported only by the Remove Background API. Other formats are not supported.
- The API supports images in the sRGB color space. If you need to process images in a different color space (e.g., P3, CMYK), this is currently not possible through the Capture One integration. However, you can achieve this by using Photoroom as a standalone service.
Requirements to use Photoroom API in Capture One
- Edit Background with Photoroom API is available in the All in One plan and Capture One Studio.
- Edit Background with Photoroom API is available in Sessions.
- A Photoroom API subscription is required for production-ready images without a watermark. The tools don't work with a Photoroom Pro subscription.
