After installing and launching Capture One 20 the very first time, the software opens with a Catalog. This should be the standard behavior for new customers who have just started using Capture One. However, existing customers may also experience the same.
NOTE: This is a known issue in Capture One 20 (13.0.0). Please download Capture One 20 (13.0.1) or any newer version where this issue is fixed.
If you do not want Capture One start with the default Catalog, press the Option key (macOS) or the Alt key (Windows) whilst launching Capture One. The Recents windows will appear so you will be able to choose the preferred Catalog/Session or create a new one.

Hi, I've just downloaded the latest version of Capture 20 and I still have this issue, Also, I've tried to launch pressing the Option key and it does not work. Your help is appreciated. Thank you.
Hi Maria,
Thank you for your comment.
Please, let me know which product variant of Capture One you are currently running (Pro, Express, etc.).
Howdy,
I'm having the same issue. I'm using Capture One 20 for Nikon, and it keeps starting up with an old catalog.
I can't stop it from happening nor can I change the catalog it opens.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Hi Matt,
Thank you for the comment.
First of all, right-click on the Capture One icon in the dock and click Quit (if you are running Capture One on macOS) or end/kill the corresponding process in the Task Manager (if you are running Capture One on Windows).
Then click on the Capture One icon to start the application and immediately press and hold the Option/Alt key on the keyboard.
Afterwards, you will see the Recents window where you can choose an existing or create a new Catalog/Session.
So my very first attempt to open capture one express I encounter a problem. Are you kidding me?
I'm being asked to choose a capture one catalog. I don't have one yet. I choose open a new catalog and it comes back and says unable to open "untitled catalog". What's up with that. I obviously must be doing something wrong.
Please advise.
Regards,
Marc
Hi Marc,
Thank you for the comment.
Immediately after clicking on the Capture One icon, please hold the Option/Alt key (Mac/Windows) on the keyboard. There should be an option to create a new Catalog.
Otherwise, navigate to the existing Catalog in the Finder/Explorer and double-click on it. Then it will open in Capture One.
Please let me know if that worked for you.
Good morning Lily,
I responded to your suggestion in an email this past Monday.
I'll paste it here:
Hi Lily,
Thanks for your note.
I have tried that. When I click New Catalog, the dialog box wants to create a catalog called “untitled catalog” at a specific location. When I click OK, the response is “Unable to open “untitled catalog”, Error: The document could not be created”
You mentioned navigating to an existing Catalog. Where would that catalog be found and what would be the file extension.
Thanks,
Marc
Any additional suggestions ?
Regards,
Marc
Hi Marc,
If you have previously created a Catalog, you can navigate to the Catalog file by typing in ".cocatalog" in the Search field of the Finder/Explorer.
Also, please let me know if you tried to create and save it on the external drive.
I have the reverse problem. even tho I have a catalog I have to select it every time I startup. I am on C1 v21 for Fuji latest build 14,4,1,16. the catalog is on my internal drive in the documents folder.
How do I get it to auto load this catalog?
Cheers,
Mark
