How can I split a catalog?
I want to split a catalog, create a separate catalog for one client.
Currently all the images are imported to a single catalog and are referenced images. I thought 'Export catalog...' was what I wanted. But that seems to be copying all the files into the new catalog, I don't want that, I want the images to stay where they are on my external hard drive.
Am I going to have to create a new catalog and import the client's picture directly there and then delete them from the original catalog. But if I do that I'll lose the colour corrections/edits already made, won't I?
Thanks!

Yes you would lose all edits.
I would just copy the catalog and then delete from each catalog what you don't want to keep.

Thanks BeO, seems to be the best way. I'm surprised I couldn't find 'official' advice on this given the number of people who seem to ask the same question!

You can find all the images you want to put in the new catalog - perhaps make an album for work for that client - then use the command on the File menu that says Export Collection as Catalog.

Thanks Ian, I did start down that road. The images are in 'job' folders and it seems you can only export a single 'collection' or folder of images at a time. So for a few hundred jobs this was going to take days. I've now made a copy of the original catalog and deleted the 'other' images to leave me with a new catalog for this single client. Only took a few minutes.

I'm glad that you have managed to do it. But you can add all your job folders for that client to an album, then the Collection you export is that album. However, you have managed what you wanted - as ever there is often more than one way of doing things.
