Healing Brush Not Working

I'm using 16.2.1.  I click on the healing brush and nothing happens to remove the line I'm trying to remove. I get the lines with the circle showing where the color match is going to come from but the red mask line is till there and nothing happens.  I can't find comments or videos to explain what to do (in case I'm doing something wrong).

    When I deactivate the mask (go to 'Background'), the line I've been trying to erase is almost gone.  I have a lot of figuring to do to make this easily usable.  Thanks for the help.

    The tutorials assume the viewer has a lot of LR or Photoshop experience.  There's little information regarding the basics and how they are implemented outside things like portrait photography.
