GRADIENT MASK

If I apply a gradient mask over the sky and then apply a Black and White conversion it converts the whole image. Is this just the way C1 works or is there some way of getting round this. Other adjustments seem to work fine with the gradient. Thanks.

    SFA - I don't much use styles. But I seem to remember them saying that some of them use the B & W tool and therefore those styles cannot be used on a layer.
