Presumably, you are referring to referenced files.

This approach has worked for me. Copy all of your referenced files to another drive, and be sure they are in the same file structure. For example, mine are in this format: Drive name/Photos/folders/subfolders with image files. Whatever format you use, copy it to the new drive and give the new drive the same name as the old drive. Capture One just looks at the drive name to locate the files.

If you change the name on the new drive, Capture One will not be able to locate the files. Capture One has no working feature to allow you to tell it the new drive's name. If you want to change a drive's name, you will need to use the Locate tool to let Capture One relocate them. It does a good job of relocating folders, even with a large number of images and folders, but it occasionally fails to connect with the files in those folders. It works better if you locate the top level folders one at a time.

My advice is to move your referenced files to a new drive and name it the same as the old drive. If you can hold the drives in your hand, this solution will work, but if the new drive is on a NAS or in the cloud, you will probably have to use the Relocate tool.

One of Capture One's big weaknesses is that it does not provide easy ways to relocate files when you have to recover from a drive failure or a need to transfer to a bigger drive. Anything you do not want to lose requires a redundant backup plan. I deal with this by having 3 drives for my referenced image collection. I use one as my primary drive and the others as a working backup. I synchronize the primary drive with the backup drive using ChronoSync. If the primary drive fails, I can change the name on one of the backups to that of the primary drive and make a new backup.

The other thing you can do is connect your old and your new drive at the same time. Add to the catalog the folder of the new drive where you want to have the pictures, then using the Library tool drag and drop folders from one drive to the other. I'd suggest doing a bit at a time, as it could slow down a bit with large transfers. Maybe start with one small folder-full and check that it works well for you before you embark on wholesale moving.

And if possible have a back up of the data before you start - TimeMachine or something.

    Ian,

What are the steps to add the folder of the new drive?

I tried adding one folder from one drive and it put the referenced file drive and the folder was added, but it did not add the subfolder. So, I added the subfolder, but that added the drive and the folders above it, but not its images. That is, the folder added had none of the images that were actually in the folder on the drive from which it was added.  I tried using the locate function, pointed to the missing files and nothing happened.

    So to summarize:

    1. Capture One does not let you to easily add just a new drive to the drive(s) that already appear below  "In Catalog image," but when you add a folder from that drive, it also adds the drive. It will not add subfolders, although it will add folders in the path above the selected folder. This is quite inefficient.

    2. It is easy to drag the folder from one drive to the other.

    3. While folders new added, their images are not and also cannot be relocated.

So I think I am missing something in your explanation. Can you explain it step by step?

Migration from old to a new SSD (or HDD) disk drive not an easy process if you have 40K+ images in your catalogue. All recommendations which I have red here before (just drug and drop folder to a new location) are not working because of following

    1) moving files taks very, very long time and any external SSD or HDD will overheat during this process. I had this problem in the past, after long copy process I have to throw away absolutely new Seagate HDD.

    2) Frequently C1 returns number of errors during the file moving process.

How I did my migration from one external HDD to another. 1) I have connected both HDD to my MacBook Pro and then start copying folder by folder from old HDD to a new HDD keeping the same folder structure on a new HDD. For my set of files (5TB) it takes three days because I have to make a break for some time to let HDD cool down after coping one or two folders at once. Each my folder contains about 10...15K images. 2) when all files were copied to a new HDD, an old HDD was turned off and I was stared C1. In a C1 orders section, all image folders were marked as missing with triangle sign. I have select the top most parent folder and click the right button on my mouse and then selects Locate menu item. In a file browsing window I have selected a the same top most pictures folder on a new HDD. 3) C1 starts rebuilding new links and Meta data from selected folder on my new HDD. Everything was fine except one moment - C1 starts rebuilding images preview and progress bar shows that this process could take about 15 hours. I was canceled this process and exit rom C1. During the next C1 start I made folder sync up and creates preview only for images imported during last year (also recommending to sync up by smaller set of folders otherwise process takes a while).

The similar migration process in Lightroom is much easier and happens almost instantly. You would need only to copy all images to a new HDD.

Do not forget to mage the catalogue backup before and after this process.

As I mentioned in a post. 2 years ago, to avoid the problems Capture One has with recognizing referenced files moved to a new drive, just copy the referenced files with thier folders so they appear exactly as they did on the original drive, name the new drive to the same name as the old drive. You can remove the old drive and keep it as a backup. Plug in the new drive and Capture One will treat it as if it were the old drive.

Hi Jerry C I agree with you, the offered method is a simplest. After coping all referenced files to a new drive it is possible to rename it using MacOS Disk Utility.  Just would like to emphasise that with the Lightroom this process is much easier.

You can just rename it in Finder. No need for Disk Utility.

It would be easier if Capture One would let you copy the folders to a new drive with the same name and then, if you wish, rename the new drive without having to relocate the files one by one as if you had to relink files moved in Finder instead of in Capture One.
