Capture One 23 and Topaz Photo AI
I'm using the Mac M1 Studio Ultra with Mac OS Ventura 13.4.1. Will I experience any performance issues if I use Capture One 23 with Topaz Photo AI? Will Topaz Photo AI function as a plug-in or will I have to use it as a standalone software? Is there any other issue that I should be aware of before I invest in the Topaz product? Thank you for your time.

It functions as a plugin. Image -> Edit With -> Process With Topaz AI This will return the enhanced image as a DNG.
I don't notice any performance issues.

Hold on!
There are big issues when working on Mac. I have the latest version op Topaz Photo AI and of Ventura. There is NO integration what so ever. First of all,
"It functions as a plugin. Image -> Edit With -> Process With Topaz AI This will return the enhanced image as a DNG." is NOT correct. This may work on Windows, it does not on Mac and is stated in the Topaz Photo AI manual. https://docs.topazlabs.com/photo-ai/plugins/capture-one
Please be more carful when giving advice Peter Bourget!
Further more the "process with" command is gone on the latest version.
For the moment, the whole integration does not work.

Whoa there. Peter Bourget's comment is over 2 months old. Topaz pushes updates almost as often as I take a deep breath so who knows what might have changed in the interim.
I can say that the Process with you mention works just fine. I used it earlier today. As to the enhanced DNG part, it's at least there on the menu. Personally, I use TIFF and haven't tested DNG. Your mileage may vary.
Here's some screenshots:

Thx for your reply.
So please explain me this and tell me why you did not include it in your screenshot.
Seems crucial to me.

I did not include that message in my screen shots because it doesn't display. I've never seen it before you posed it above and I've used Topaz since before there was a PhotoAI. When I click Edit Variants at the bottom of the second image, the image opens in Topaz. Topaz then does its thing. When I'm done, I click Save to Capture One (bottom right corner in Topaz). Topaz creates a TIFF (based on my selection in that box you see in the 2nd image), returns it to Capture One and closes itself (ie Topaz is no longer running even behind Capture One). One nice, neat round trip with minimal clicks.
If I were to take a guess - and that's all it would be - as to why you're getting an error message, I'd say something is messed up with your Topaz install. I had some issues early on with PhotoAI. Actually took several messages back and forth over a few days to get things ironed out. Turned out to be a permissions issue.
Edit: You say there are issues when working on Mac but then you reference an error message that mentions Windows. I'm confused.

Thx for your input Jordan.
I am not referencing an error message. I am referencing the webpage on the Topaz-website, that you find here:
https://docs.topazlabs.com/photo-ai/plugins/capture-one
I tried to open it also in private browsing: so it doesn't involve a clever personalisation algorithm from their part. What they are actually saying is: there is no workable plug-in integration with C1. And that is really frustrating.

Sorry, I have to apologise to Peter Bourget. He actually was absolutely right about the "It functions as a plugin. Image -> Edit With -> Process With Topaz AI This will return the enhanced image as a DNG."
It is all about the "Process With" part; there are 2 commands possible, the other one is the same but doesn't include the "Process With". The Process With command seemed to have disappear. Not only in my case but others witnessed it too. After having reinstalled both C1 and Topaz Photo AI, the "Process With" command is back again and it works.
I promise to be more careful with my criticism in the future: sorry again.

I reported, in the Topaz community, issues I was experiencing with Topaz Photo AI and images from my camera Canon EOS R5. When using a CR3 file with Denoise and Sharpen, boxes are produced in the dng file. To remove it, I tried without sharpening and received a strong green tint in the dng file. The Denoise setting was standard. So, I created a 16 bit TIFF in C1 and accessed Topaz Photo AI in the Pictures folder by right clicking on the TIFF file and choosing Open With. I'm using the Mac M1 Studio Ultra. Denoise worked great except for the purple tint. Uploaded the original 16 bit TIFF and the resultant images to the Topaz community. A few days later, Topaz Labs responded and suggested I wait for the September update, v2.0. It is supposed to resolve the tinting and other issues.
For the time that I used Topaz Photo AI, I never had an issue locating the plug-in in Image in the Apple (C1) menu or by right clicking on the image in the C1 browser and scrolling down to Edit With.

No worries Peter Van Puyvelde. I have been using PhotoAI from the beginning and the other separate programs before that. At one time "Edit with" did return the image and then they changed it to "Process with" to return the image. That really messed me up at the time.
Brian, I'm not real knowledgeable about the difference between TIFF and DNG. I use the DNG because it is smaller, is there an advantage to using TIFF instead?

Reading through this topic
I am having an issue with getting the drop down menu in the image tab to show "process with" when trying to use Topaz AI, I am new to this plugin and would like someone explain how to get that function to work.
I see one comment says they had to uninstall and reinstall both C! and topaz AI to get it to work, is that the only way?
Thanks for any help.

Patrick,
What OS are you using, Mac or Windows? Are you using Topaz Photo AI version 2?
What C1 version are you using?

I was able to resolve the issue after communicating with Topaz Labs and trial and error.
I uninstalled both C1 and Topaz AI and reinstalled then I was able to Process with Topaz AI when it shown up in the drop down menu, image - edit with- Process with Topaz AI.

Using the latest versions of C1 and Topaz Photo AI. With Fuji RAF files, my (unsatisfactory experience is the following):
- edit with- Process with Topaz AI: RAW file is transferred to Topaz Photo AI, without any edits like Film Simulations or color or tone enhancements. Only Cropping can be applied. DNG is returned back to catalogue. Film Simulations cannot be applied to that file. What use could this process have?
- edit with - Topaz Photo AI: TIF file is created and transferred to Topaz Photo AI with all the edits. Nice, if the processed file could then be brought to the C1 catalogue. However, when saved after processing in Topaz Photo AI - cannot be saved as DNG, only as TIF, JPEG etc., to the "original folder", the file basically disappears. No change to the TIF file in C1 catalogue. Also, this TIF file can nowhere by found on my hard drive. Of course, the file can be saved to a specifically selected folder, and from there imported into the C1 catalogue. What a cumbersome "roundtrip".
SOLUTION, at least for me, temporarily: Work with SESSION in C1. The TIF file processed in, and exported from Topaz can then be found in the Capture Folder of the session, and further processed in C1. Nice. Only, but major, disadvantage of this process: File Size is at least five times the original raw file. But this is Topaz' fault: Why does it not allow to export a processed TIF as a DNG? Of course export from Topaz as a JPEG, may to give some finishing touch in C1. But the huge TIF created by C1 will remain on your hard drive. You could of course create a DNG out of this in C1 or in another editor for C1 independent storage of your edits. But this "transfer" file will have to be deleted by hand, if you want to avoid filling up your hard drive with such TIF "transfer" files.

An additional problem I found (WIN-Version):
The 'Edit with'-feature with Topaz Denoise AI doesn't correctly function with the DNG-mechanism .
Allt he lens corrections and profile corrections , made to the original .NEF-files in the very beginning of C1-import , are lost when passed to Topaz Denoise AI . The DNG-files coming back (for further processing with C1PRO) are not even similiar to the original RAW-files .
Only the TIF-version will produce somehow reasonable results , when used as final step after the complete C1-processing

Fully agree with Paul Dieter Möller.
