Who knows and maybe, maybe not.

By "buy" I assume you mean a perpetual license.  Perpetual license holders get updates for the "dot" release.  In this case you'd buy 16.3 so you'd get all the 16.3.x updates but not anything 16.4 or later.  Since adding a new camera is adding new tech, you'd only get the new camera support if Capture One happened to release that new functionality alongside a dot update patch.

If "buy" means subscribe, then, again, there is really no predicting when Capture One will add support for that camera.  However, as a subscriber, you will get that functionality when (if) it's added.

Personally, I'd never buy a piece of software hoping the developer would add camera support later.

Thanks for the answer. Unfortunately, not sounding positive in two ways: a. there's no timeline, which forces me to delay the camera buy for an undefined amount of time and b. there's no clear perspective on what to spend. Of course, b. wouldn't be an issue as a subscriber but do I want to spend that much money as a hobby photographer?

I agree with you that hoping the support would fix this later is too much of a gamble. All I can say: "C'mon capture one, your product is so good, don't risk losing a customer over this!"

Right off the bat, let me say in big, bold letters: I am not affiliated with Capture One in any way.  I have no inside info.  Anything I say here is based on my own personal experience and is based on nothing more than publicly available info I've become aware of as a user of the software.

That said, here's my 2 cents.  First, I can't imagine any world where Capture One doesn't add support for this camera.  My understanding is that adding support is kind of a dance between the camera mfg and Capture One (or whatever developer) + development time to bake in and test support.  So the questions are: How long will I have to wait? and Will it be included in a 16.3.x release?

You can certainly use Adobe's DNG converter (free) to take those Sony files from .arw to .dng and hope.  I wouldn't go that route.  My luck isn't that good.  I also wouldn't pass up the new functionality offered by the camera.

Because of all the rapid innovation this year and what I think we'll see going forward, I made the decision this year to move to a subscription.  There is a bit of a discount offered now (I think) so you can kick off the subscription for a lower entry cost.  Also, not sure if you're aware but for every year you subscribe you get a 20% discount towards the purchase of a perpetual license.  Get tired of the subscription after a year?  Buy a new perpetual at 20% off.  After 5 years? Free.  And you can sit on that discount so down the road somewhere you find the hobby isn't tickling your fancy as strongly or maybe innovation has started to slow a bit, step over to the perpetual.

In case heat of the discussion took the focus away, I want to hint there is a minor action pending: move to "Request camera support"...

Marcin Mrzygłocki Good deal.  I can hide threads for moderation but I can't move them.

    A) Thanks for moving. I thought I followed the procedure but apparently not fully,
    B) I was appealing to Capture One, not to you in person. I'm aware of your position, Brian. Sorry for not being clear about this - and thanks for your work here as a moderator. I appreciate the time and effort that flows in here.

All of your input is helpful in some way, since it helps clearing the picture. It just looks like the company follows its own marketing agenda.
Understandably, today's software needs to be updated continuously and thus a continuous line of income for the developer. Subscriptions are best for this. But, even the discount model (which is better than most other developer offer) comes for a high total amount over the years. Personally, I have to weigh this with my own use case: is it worth it?

Coming back to the starting point: The information that is provided by capture one regarding camera and lens updates isn't very helpful in making a purchase decision. Apperantly, other users weren't successful in using c1 23 even in the newest built with raw photos from Sony a7c ii. That's the only baseline for a buyers decision that I can use today.

Please upvote the post requesting camera support here: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/13218923431709-Sony-%CE%B17cII

Support is coming, I just can't say when because I simply don't know. What I will say is that implementing camera support is a two way street...

Andreas Mayer You can always check which cameras we're working on supporting, or will never support in the "Request Camera Support" topic that is linked above. All supported cameras are also contained herein: https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002718118-Camera-models-and-RAW-files-supported-by-Capture-One
