Poor performances on M2 Pro
Hello,
I'm considering investing on the MBP 14" with the M3 Max CPU.
I have tried to run C1 on the Mac mini M2 Pro with 16GB and it's so slow !
I need to know if the latest realease has fixed the poor performances.
When selecting an image, it takes 3 seconds to load it on the mac mini
When editing C1 is not realeasing the RAM and after few minutes on the mac mini it was swaping.
Will a more powerfull Mac improve anything or is it a faulty design of C1 ?
Thanks

I have an M1 Max MacStudio with 32GB but used to have the original M1 MacMini with 16GB and never had issues with C1 performance. C1 does use a lot of RAM and could even go past 32GB during long editing sessions but RAM and swapping is rarely an issue since the internal SSD is so fast that you won't notice much difference. It could be an issue if the internal SSD is low on space as you then start compromising the whole system, not just C1. Watch out for that.
Issues with C1 performance are usually related to where the data is stored. I'm assuming you have your images stored externally since the internal drive would be plenty fast enough. So on external media, I would avoid NAS, HDDs (spinners), and USB-connected drives. Instead, I would recommend using DAS with Thunderbolt and fast SSD, preferably multiple modules in a RAID 0 (striped) setup. This gives you maximum throughput which is crucial when C1 first reads the image from disk and loads it into the viewer.
Another thing to check regarding performance would be the attached screen's resolution. There have been reports of issues with high-resolution screens (4K, 5K, 6K) where C1 would struggle with performance. You can try connecting a lower-resolution screen (like 2K) or changing the resolution in your system settings and see if that improves performance. - I can't comment on a Mini with 4K since I used to have mine connected to a 2K screen then and it was fast. However, now I have a 4K + a 2K screen setup on the M1 Max Studio and I don't see any issues with performance.
Lastly, you could try to turn off "Hardware Acceleration" in the Capture One settings and ensure that the preview size matches the screen resolution. I don't expect this to be an issue though since this works fine for me with everything turned on.
So to answer your question; no, I don't think a more powerful Mac will improve the performance. Your current machine should be fast enough to run C1 performantly. The issue likely lies somewhere else.
