Embedded resolution

I am a Senior Imaging Technician at The British Library.

Our largest customer wants us to embed the resolution manually on the images (real resolution measured from capture, before processing.)
What would be the best way to add this metadata?
Should it be an IPTC field? Is there a better way?
What would be the best way/tool for my customer to read this metadata from the TIFF images?
