Tethering C1pro to Nikon Z8
-
Sorry my Pro is M1 chip and running Sonoma 14.2.

It works for me on the Z8. (I am very new to tethering, but I was trying it out for the sake of curiosity sparked by a different thread.) I also tried it with the Z6ii and the Z50. The Z50 kept dropping out. Maybe the cable is the problem? What cable are you using?

Thanks for your comment. Are you running Sonoma update?
I just purchased the cable - Tethertools USB C to USB C 15' (4.6m). I tried my Nikon ZF also and it does the same thing. Drops out between shots and the Capture 1 error message comes up saying 'attach camera - the camera could not be attached' . My d850 never had issues dropping out. I shoot all my work tethered so need a reliable system. I also tried lightroom and the cameras do not connect there either.

I'm running Sonoma 14.2. There was an issue that 14.2 messed up tethering (for other apps like Lightroom as well as Capture One) but release 16.3.3 was supposed to have fixed that.

Just curious are you running capture 0ne 23 16.3.3 ?

Yes, I am.

Thanks, I have 2 c1 installs original and 23 but only running 23. This maybe causing an issue so will uninstall the original.

Which release of 23 are you on? Support for the Z8 was added to 23 with release 16.2.0.
I'm not sure what you mean by "original".

Your tether cable is a bit long for USB-C tethering. Try a shorter cable. I think 3 meters is the max recommended without a signal booster.

I have capture one 23 pro 16.1.3.10 and capture one pro 16.3.3.6 both are installed but have the same problem with both. I wonder if there is a conflict somewhere and I need to delete one ?

Thanks for the info on the cable will try a shorter cable

Belle D - 16.1.3 certainly doesn't support the Z8, so you definitely need to run 16.3.3. I don't think you need to uninstall 16.1.3, but you may have no need to keep it installed.

I've had trouble with intermittent connection using a Tethertools 15' USB-C cable on both Fuji and Sony. Switched to this cable and haven't had any issues.

Brian Jordan – that makes sense. The cable has builtin signal boosters.

Walter Rowe. Yup. Well made and comparable in price to the non-boosted Tethertools. I'm a fan.

I had no idea such a cable exists - I was able to find only TetherTools and Mathorn so far, and I'm too much an avid "shop scout"..! And out of these two I think only Mathorn makes "short" cables.
Maybe many such problems are somehow caused by limited availability of tethering cables?

Marcin Mrzygłocki I'm not much of a gambler and I'd bet that the vast majority of tethering issues come down to the cable. The USB C "standard" is horrible. The average user sees a plug that fits in a hole and reasonably assumes it'll work. Sadly, that's not the case. We try to connect gear that costs multiple thousands of dollars with computers that are likewise expensive via a $3 cable and don't understand why the cable could be the cause. But, because the ends are shaped the same, we also don't understand why we should pay $50 for this cable when that cable is only $3.

That's the problem, Brian Jordan, not many $50 cables to choose from... Even if I wanted to pay more, the choice is very limited.
There is also a bit of documentation problem - I was confused by stories about cameras being charged during tethering and the final and proven explanation was that it only works on TetherTools C to C, while I had C to A, because my laptop's USB C was already taken by external SSD.

What length are you looking for? Here's a 15' for $60. https://nine-volt.com/products/iqwire-the-intelligent-photography-tether-cable?variant=33623055433787
Tethertools has shorter. They're not boosted but I've never had any issues with the shorter cables. Here's their 3' cable: https://tethertools.com/product/tetherpro-usb-c-to-usb-c/
I'm not familiar with the other brands.

The IQwire cables seem to be horrendously expensive here in the UK, if you can get them at all.

And no delivery outside UK for that shop above, EU is screwed with intercontinental shipping.

If you’re interested, I’m happy to ship you one. Brian@ bjordanphoto .com. Send me an email and we can work out details.

That's kind of you Brian Jordan. But I'm not really in the market for one, I was just interested to see how these compared with tethertools which is what I'd always seen people recommending before.

Weird they’d be so much more expensive there. That’s almost double plus extra shipping. If you change your mind, the offer always stands.

Woo hoo. Thanks for the suggestion, Brian. The Nine Volt USB C to USB C / 16.5' [5m] / Straight Tether Cable worked like a charm with my Z8.
Fired up C1, plugged in the cable, turned on my Z8 and instant connnection, WITH NO DISCONNECTS.
I haven't tested it yet with a lengthy session, but my hopes are high.

Steve, I am stoked this worked for you! Please do post back when you’ve had a chance to test more thoroughly. Maybe we can help others having connectivity issues.
