Yes, I know this behaviour, often also run into. A warning would be good.
But if you right after use the Undo command, the image is back with it's adjustments.

Undo did not seem to work for me, the image was gone completely forever.

If you have a healing brush spot you don't want, you should be able to delete it provided it is selected.

In this screen shot, I tapped on the source point for the arrow bottom right - it was then highlighted in orange, and if I use the delete key, it is removed and the others stay as they are.

Also, you don't say whether you are using a catalog or a session, but if you have inadvertently deleted an image, you should find it in the catalog trash or session trash as the case may be an you can just drag it back out again to where it was.

Ah, I was clicking on the target - i.e. where I had painted with the brush - and getting another unwanted brush spot. So getting really frustrated with this I hit delete and then everything vanished without warning. Why is the source point the way to select a spot, surely where you just painted is the intuitive way to do it.

Don't know*. But if you hover anywhere inside the source circle, you get a 4-way arrow and you can move the source point, or select it and delete it entirely.

    * Though I suppose one reason may be that you could want to paint a further heal within the same area.

    - If I paint one which even touches another it seems to fuse with the first and use the same source point even though the reason for using adjacent ones is to use a different source point for the second.

    -------------

The default within C1 where in image is concerned involves a modifier key,

    - Sorry, I have no idea what that means, my C1 setup is almost as it came, just moved the windows around a bit.

You can click to select a source point first, using Alt, and then paint as you like, including an overlay with an existing painted part if needed.

He means using another key in conjunction with the Delete key. As far as I can see (on a Mac at least) the default key combination to send an image to the catalog trash is Command+Delete. Shift+Command+Delete deletes an image from disk, not just sending it to the trash. Delete by itself doesn't do anything. You can check what the keyboard shortcuts are on your setup by looking at the ones shown on the image menu.

Thank you both for the explanations, my setup uses the default CTRL and ALT keys in conjunction with Delete so why the Delete key on its own has such a dramatic effect I've no idea. Hopefully now that I know how to select a Heal I will be able to avoid the problem.

Which Delete key on your Keyboard are you typically using?.........

The dedicated "Delete" key, not the dual "Del" or "." key on the numeric keypad.

All my keyboard shortcuts are the C1 standard, the only time "Del" is referenced is with either CTRL or ALT, never as a single key. "Delete" is not referenced at all and is physically located in a group with Insert, Home, Page Up, End and Page Down.

I just tried the "Del" key in the numeric keypad and that deletes the image (moves to catalog trash) with no warning.

In Preferences every warning is ticked bar the one for syncing metadata.

I just had a thought, I'm using a laptop with a USB keyboard and external monitor, wonder if the keyboard driver is screwing things up?

No - unpluggong the keyboard and pressing "Delete" on the laptop has the same effect.

By doing this I've also found that Undo under the Edit menu tab does not restore the image to the catalog, when I select it the screen flashes but nothing happens and there are now two images missing from my catalog.

So I know how to avoid the issue but I'm seriously unimpressed by the lack of a warning and the non-function of the Undo option.

I've seen this behavior too, this was in an album under a user collection, healing brush with the point selected in orange, pressed delete and the variant went away. i was able to find it in my catalog folder with the same edits and dragged it back to the album, so it seems it wants to delete the variant at times when you have the healing brush point selected. i went back and did the exact same thing after putting the image back in the album and this time it deleted the heal point. maybe just a visual issue where it appears to have the heal point selected but not?

Yes, I've seen this too, though not for a while now. I think I was able to remedy it with the Undo command (Cmd-Z or Ctrl-Z as the case may be) though as I say it was a while ago and my memory may be at fault.
