Previews- what are they for, exactly?

Full size previews? Capture one allows previews of up to 5120px. No full size preview option is present. Offline editing is possible if drive containing original files is disconnected. Previews are there so original files are not accessed every time you are browsing catalog or session. If you zoom level is higher then resolution of preview then original file is read. Ideally preview size should be more or less matching your display resolution.

Yes that’s what I meant by “full size preview” - the largest possible. And that is very significantly larger than my screen size. Drive access kicks in immediately anyway, before I can do anything, so zoom should not be a factor.

Whatever, it doesn’t work. At least not for me.

As I said drive will always be on while it is connected and images on it browsed. Capture one is looking if originals are still there. For viewing until certain level of zoom only preview is used. Using to large previews doesn’t do much as as soon as you start editing originals need to be accessed. Offline editing is possible if drive with originals is disconnected but some adjustments can be done only if originals are present. Previews in Capture One are a bit like smart previews in Lightroom but they are not proxies. It is impossible to have all data from original raw in small preview file so for most adjustments access to original file is necessary.

I think C1 just didn't think about sleeping connections, they though you are either working disconnected/offline or online.

You could create a feature request. Do you have a preference how to "wake up" a sleeping drive or network connection, only when zooming past preview size or exporting?

BeO, yes, that would be in line with what some other applications do.

Lukasz, my reading is that Adobe "Smart Previews" are proxies.  What adjustments in LrC are not available in Lr Mobile?  I can't think of any offhand.

It's not a big deal. It just seems to me that C1 performance could be improved by avoiding unnecessary access to originals.  Then again there might be some limitations due to Sessions v Catalog.

Then again there might be some limitations due to Sessions v Catalog.

Certainly previews are handled differently in Sessions and Catalogs.

    • if you have a session, and the images are on an external disk, the previews are on the external disk too.
    • if you have a catalog (on an internal disk) referencing images on an external disk, the previews are on the internal disk inside the catalog structure.
