Perpetual license is not providing me a reason to upgrade right now
I currently have C1 22 which does not have Nikon Z8 support (15.3.1.17).
Since I recently bought a Z8, I want to purchase a perpetual license. But the way their versioning works it forces me to postpone upgrading. Let's take a look at the current version history and the time between updates:
16.3 released 2 nov
16.3.1 - 13 nov (11 days)
16.3.2 - 30 nov (17 days)
16.3.3 - 14 dec (14 days)
16.3.4 - 8 feb (56 days)
16.3.5 - 12 feb (4 days)
16.3.6 - 23 feb (11 days)
So if I purchase today (25 feb) I get 4 free updates at best. Assuming a new version is coming every 2 weeks with bugfixes, this gives me an additional 8 weeks of updates.
But if I wait to upgrade until version 16.4 is released, I assume I have roughly 18 weeks of updates. That's double the amount.
Also, recently Nikon released an update for the Z8, adding pixel shift support. Capture One added support for this in version 16.3.4. If luck would have it and Nikon released this firmware update while C1 was at version 16.3.9, I would have to pay for a new license just to use my camera with the new firmware.
And no, the subscription is not an option for me, it's a terrible value since I can just get Lightroom and Photoshop and 20 gb cloud storage for literally half the cost.

First, keep in mind that this is a user forum and not one that's staffed by Capture One. If you want to directly interact with C1, you should use the "Request Support" link at the top of the page.
I think you're not understanding how perpetual licenses currently work. All of the versions you listed are 16.3.x. If you held a perpetual license for any 16.3 version, you'd have gotten all of the versions you listed at no extra charge. You'd have to pay if you upgrade to a 16.4, 16.5, etc. version, and then all upgrades that start with those first three characters would be free.

It’s a gamble at this point in time and it shouldn’t be, so I completely agree with John. For the amount of money they ask, N should be 12. That said, I bought an upgrade a month ago and am very happy with it. I gambled major versions happen roughly once a year like they used to. Note I’m a born optimist and have been bitten by the friendly C1 strategists more than once (Media Pro comes to mind).
