Capture one makes a catalog that contains a raw file of every file edited in capture one are those raw files simply backups or does Capture one make use of them for something else?

    When you have a Capture One catalog, you have two options for what Capture One does with your raw images.

    1. It can copy them to the catalog. In this case the raw image files are stored inside the catalog. They are extra copies of the raw files. They appear in the Library tool in the catalog under the heading "In Catalog". These are known as managed images. You import them that way by choosing "Copy into catalog" in the Import panel. The trouble with this method is that if the images are already on your computer, you are doubling up the storage space taken. (Also with a large number of images, the catalog becomes very large. I'd only use managed images for a catalog with a small number of images. Also it's no good if you want to be able to use some other app like Lightroom sometimes, because other apps can't see inside the Capture One catalog. You'd have to export them to get them to Lightroom etc.)
    2. It can add them to the catalog without copying them into the catalog. You choose  "Add to catalog" on import. This can leave the images where they are - the Capture One catalog indexes them and keeps track of where they are, but it doesn't create an extra copy so it doesn't use up so much space. These are known as referenced images. This is no good if the original images are on removable media such as a memory card, but see (3) below.
    3. A variation on referenced images, if you are importing from a memory card, is to choose an option to Copy to a Folder. The images can't stay where they are (because the memory card will be removed, and reused), but they are copied into a folder of your choice on your computer and Capture One can treat them as referenced images as in (2) above. 

    A single catalog can include both referenced and managed images if you want.
