No support in Capture One 22 Pro for Nikon Z8 NEF RAW? Will Capture One release an update?
I bought a Nikon Z8 recently and found out that Capture One 22 Pro on my macbook could not open the NEF RAW file. Searching Capture One website shows Capture One Pro service pack 16.3.5 released in Feb 2024 can solve this problem. However, I downloaded and installed it and it now shows up as a separate trial version of Capture One, which requires payment of $299 after 30 days to use. Could someone with similar experiences give a brief explanation of how to incorporate this service pack into Capture One 22 Pro that I have had for 2 years? Many thanks in advance.
Also I would like to have Capture One tech support to answer this question. I don't think that to add a now camera file support requires a new payment of $299 is a ligit business practice. Maybe I did not do it correctly installing the service pack 16.3.5 and hopefully tech support could point to the direction.

Hi,
I found a perfect solution though it involves an extra step. Adobe provide a free file format conversion tool DNG Converter, which can read any photo format and convert into DNG files then Capture One 22 Pro can read it without loss. Just go Adobe.com to download it.
I have to say that it sucks Capture One does not provide updates to read a simple new file that is slightly different.

It's possibly not a perfect solution. You may or may not find that files converted to DNG are just as good as files dealt with natively. I haven't tried it myself but I am told that it is not wholly satisfactory. You could compare the results you get with DNG to the results you get with native support by downloading and installing a free trial of the latest Capture One release.
(I suspect that it might not be as straightforward as you imagine to provide updated camera support to previous versions of Capture One - how far back would you expect them to go in updating the app?)

Thanks for the comment. According to official information conversion between RAW and dog is lossless. I have looked at converted images and can”t find anything suspicious especially deep shadows and large contrasting areas. Dng files are a little smaller than RAW because it uses more efficient compression than RAW.

If it works for you, well and good. A friend of mine says that when he has tried it he has been disappointed - with the colours, if I remember correctly. But do what suits you.

An issue is that Capture One has incomplete support for all types of DNG files. Some work, some do not (typically color issues). If a particular DNG from a particular source is working, then you're probably good. Also keep in mind that DNG files have versions just like everything else and an older program will at some point probably have trouble reading newer DNG files or may miss some information in them. So, just because you're "using DNG" doesn't mean you stay with older software forever and always read the latest DNG files.
There was a thread only a few days ago about Linear DNG files (a particular type of DNG file) produced by DxO after noise reduction which do not work properly in Capture One.
As for older versions of Capture One getting updated for newer cameras, that just isn't how the whole industry works - only the latest version gets updated for newer RAW files. Lightroom and Capture One and pretty much all others all do it the same way and it's always been that way. This would be one advantage of subscription as you would always have access to the latest version. Or, you just have to know that buying a new camera will probably mean you need to buy an updated for a RAW editor.

If your version of Capture One does not have native support for the Z8, then the derivative DNG files will be processed with a Generic DNG profile that is not optimized for the Z8. Don't expect this to have the same high quality output as you would get from a version of Capture One that supports the Z8 camera native NEF files using a Capture One custom Z8 camera profile.

Walter Rowe - Don't DNG files contain their own color profile as created by the camera manufacturer or the DNG converter (that did understand the native RAW format)? And, why would it be bad to use that?

Since it’s lossless conversion and I have not seen any quality issues, I guess it’s simply changes formatting layer. By the way the conversion is lightening fast.

@JF .. make no assumptions about Capture One's handling of DNG derivatives.

Walter Rowe - Are you saying that Capture One ignores the color profile in a DNG?

I do not know any specific details about how Capture One handles DNG files. DNG files come in different flavors. DNG (much like PSD) itself is a derivative of TIFF. It can contain different kinds of data. It is up to Capture One to handle it how they determine is appropriate based on their interpretation of the specifications and how their raw processing engine works.
