Windows on ARM benchmarks (CoPilot+ PC performance)
I posted previously about using C1 on the new CoPilot+ PCs (Has anyone installed Capture One on Snapdragon X laptops? - Capture One). That post attracted a bit of attention, so I thought I would share some more of my experiences. Today it's about benchmarks.
So firstly, you have to remember that C1 does not currently have a version for Windows on ARM. Their MAC version of course is ARM capable, given MACs been there for a few years now. So, these benchmarks run C1 on the emulator, so I was not expecting amazing performance, but I certainly got a surprise.
The simple benchmark I constructed was to regenerate previews for a whole directory of photos. There were 775 photos, with a mixture of JPG (from mobile phone), DNG (also from mobile phone), and ARW RAWs from my Sony A6600. I made sure that C1 was set to generate previews at 4K resolution, and all were set to Generate as quickly as possible. I had three systems to run this on...
My old desktop (Intel NUC 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1165G7 @ 2.80GHz, with NVidia Geforce RTX2060) - Took 8:55
My old laptop (Surface Pro 9 12th Gen Core I7-1255U 2.60 GHz) - Took 10:13
My new laptop (Lenovo Yoga Slim 7 with Snapdragon X Elite) - Took 8:35
To my complete astonishment, the CoPilot PC even outperformed my desktop. And that's with C1 being run in the emulator! I imagine that if C1 is recompiled for Windows on ARM, we should get at least another 40-50% speed improvement.
So, CaptureOne, please consider this as a request.

Excellent analysis Ulrich. I'm sure that the Snapdragon X Elite will become more widely adopted by other computer manufacturers and this will hopefully put pressure on C1 to develop a native Windows on ARM version of Capture One.

Thanks for doing that Ulrich! I'm curious about the battery usage on the emulated version vs the surface pro 9, as I've heard that emulated apps use signifigantly more battery life? Any chance you could test that when you get a chance?

I think that would be very difficult to test. My Pro 9 is now a year old, and if you get a battery report, it says the battery is running about 92% of optimum. The Yoga is running at 100%. If I set up a test I'd need to find something that would take at least 2 hours for each device and run the test. I could do a much bigger directory of photos of course, but that will have to wait.
Looking at it more simply, I've been using the Yoga with Capture One during the evenings, just like I used to do with the Surface Pro 9, and the battery on the Yoga easily outlasts the Surface Pro. After about 2 hours of casual photo editing, etc the Yoga is still at 80%+ battery, whereas the Surface Pro 9 used to be down below 70%. Thats not a particularly accurate test, but it's pretty conclusive in my opinion.

Good enough for me! thanks!
