Image management on external SSD
The recent (7-2024) Capture One update email says in part…. “ Import and export to external storage Using external storage, you no longer have to fill up your device with thousands of photos.” That’s great, so IF I attach an external SSD to iPad, can I view manipulate process and save images ON THE CONNECTED SSD, without actually importing those images to C1Pro for iPad? I CAN use that protocol currently on the desktop version of C1Pro, and do it frequently.

You import them as referenced images like you would on the desktop so I am told.

Hello Walter. IF you could expand a bit. Where would I find the "import as reference image" selection in C1Pro for the iPad? I searched extensively when I saw the images in their folder on the SSD. I selected all of the images in their folder on the SSD. Could not find that import option.
Thanks.

After you select the files and press the Import icon you will be asked whether to add or copy to catalog. The "add" makes them referenced from the external disk. The "copy" makes them managed copies stored inside the catalog.
This screenshot shows adding referenced images to the catalog.
This screenshot shows emptying referenced images from the trash.

Thank you Walter. Simple solutions as is usually the case!

Hello again: Well now I have another problem that I can’t solve. Shot test images on my A7Cr. Copied the files onto my external SSD to a specific folder. Mounted the SSD to my iPad and Launched C1Pro for iPad. I copied the files from SSD to C1Pro retaining the images on the SSD, with referenced views on iPad. NOTHING, shows. I tried 10 images, I tried 1 image. I’ve imported the same images from the SSD to a C1Pro session on my Mac, and they imported as they should..
I ran another test where I tethered from A7Cr to C1Pro, and the tether worked as expected. everything shows.
My frustration with C1Pro for iPad continues. Might end up deleting the app as I did early in 2024. The frustrations with the Mobil version are beginning to make this not worth the effort, especially when the desktop version functions flawlessly.

Is it possible it is taking a long time to build previews?

Hello Walter. No, that’s not the issue. Trying to import even one image the image the image count specific to the import sidebar never rises, as if nothing happened.
When I tether, using the same thunderbolt usb-c cable the 61mp Sony raw files appear in c1Pro in less than a second. It can’t be the hardware! I hope I can find a solution. I can always fall back on the desktop version, and eventually just get a newer and more robust MacBook Air, which is physically not much larger than my iPad. Would rather not though!

Well, I tried one more scenario related to tethering. I greatly enjoy tethering to C1Pro for iPad. Super fast even with 61mp Sony raw files, fantastic color accuracy and very capable interface for file optimization.
My only desire was to not have these huge raw files accumulate on the iPad. Using a Belkin 4 port USB-C hub, https://a.co/d/gMhb3mT I can supply external power, and attach 3 additional USB-C devices, in this case my external SSD, and my Sony camera.
After many attempts, I determined there was no way to assign a folder on my external SSD as the capture folder for these huge raw files. Tethering, the files would always need to be saved to the SSD on the iPad. Back to square one (again). I think the problem lies not with Capture One, but with the iPad’s lack of a real finder/file system like on a Mac. iPad OS is just very kludgy when trying to move image files around efficiently. Going to stick with C1Pro for the Mac, which always functions without limitations!
Frustrated, I’ve again deleted C1Pro for iPad, hoping to have it resurrect again in some future update.

Tethering to iPad or iPhone will always store the images to internal storage ("inside the catalog").

Hello Walter.
I appreciate your clarification. I was under the assumption (incorrectly) that based on the email update I received from capture one it would have been possible to achieve this copying to an external hard drive.

Hello - Putting tethering aside, I’m still having the same issue where no matter what import option I select, the files are copied to my ipad storage. I have not been able to get to the second screenshot that Walter included above.
Walter - Any chance you could help clarify how you got to that screen? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm thinking this must be an Apple IOS issue where there is no real finder/folder capability structure as in Mac OS. I loved C1Pro mobile. The worse issue was, if I wanted to delete image files I didn't want on my iPad, many many many files were still buried somewhere in sub folders on the iPad. I had a year of image files I thought were deleted, until my iPad internal SSD was down to a few megabytes of storage. The ONLY way I could delete these unwanted files, was to uninstall C1Pro and then re-install it. I had to permanently delete the app.

Have the same issue where even when I delete photos, the originals stay buried in my ipad storage. I don’t think it’s an ipad issue though - Davinci for ipad let’s me work off of SSDs with zero issues whatsoever

Actully come to think of this, I just started using Resolve/iPad. The external SSD I use does not exhibit any of these unusual C1Pro issues with image management. I hope at some point the C1 developers change something. Especially with 60-100 mp digital camera and backs, even an iPad with maxed out storage will eventually run dry.
I greatly enjoy using C1Pro for the desktop; have for the last 8 years after leaving Lightroom. Currently not using the iPad variation of C1 for this issue. I shudder at the thought of using Lightroom for iPad, but do wonder if it tethers and if LR exhibits the same files' issue?
