When applying a layer the image darkens and blacks out ?

I am using M/Boook pro. Sonoma 14.6.1

  Perhaps you have the display greyscale mask option enabled? If so, you don't see the image, just the mask. It's white or shades of grey where the mask is, and black where there is no mask, so therefore black for an empty layer. The default keyboard shortcut for it is Option-M or change it from the Layer menu. (It's convenient that there is a keyboard shortcut, but that also means that it is possible to hit the key combination by accident.)
