Replacing old version of Capture One

It says this because both the new version and the old version are called Capture One.app.

If you say yes to replacing it,

    • the new version of the app will be installed,
    • the old version of the app will be removed, and
    • nothing will happen to any of your existing catalogs or sessions - you will still be able to use them with the new version. Depending on what version an older session or catalog was last used with, Capture One may need to upgrade it to a new format, but there is no harm in that: a backup of the old session or catalog will be automatically created, but usually there is no need to use that.

If you prefer to keep the old version of the app as well as installing the new one, you can either

    • rename the old app perhaps to Capture One 16-3.app, so that there then won't be two apps of the same name, or
    • do nothing first and the app will be installed with a separate name, but that won't be exactly Capture One.app (maybe Capture One 1.app, or something?) which could be confusing.

Personally, I always just let it install over the top of the old app. After all, if there was some trouble with it, you can always download again the installer for a previous version. And either way, rest assured that the installation process doesn't touch your sessions and catalogs. (You may find, though, that the recent sessions list at the top of the Library tool gets reset, but that doesn't mean the sessions have disappeared.)

EDIT: and of course, before you update anything you always make sure that you have a system backup from Time Machine, Carbon Copy Cloner, or something equivalent, don't you?

An important note before you upgrade. Have you purchased a permanent license for 16.3 or a subscription?
The upgrade is only free if you have a subscription, otherwise you must purchase a new license for version 16.5.
C1 has changed the license policy. Versions 16.3, 16.4 and 16.5 are now the main paid versions, free updates are indicated by the last digit in the version number, e.g. 16.3.8 would be free if you have purchased a permanent license for 16.3, each 16.5.x version would cost you a new license again. You won't be able to activate the v16.5.3 after installation with your current key.
