Thumbnails Randomly Change
When I open my CO (v16.4.5.29) to a Catalog with 116 images, all the thumbnails are identical to just one of the photos - even though they weren't last time I opened it (i.e, only one thumbnail is correct and all the others are identical to that one) even though NONE of the underlying photos are the same.
When I click on any of the incorrect thumbnails, in about a second, the thumbnail corrects itself. A real pain to "fix" 116 photos - especially when I never know if the next time I open the catalog, the same thing (but with a different thumbnail, may happen all over again.
Or when I change the 'Sort" from "Manual" to "By Name", "Sequence" etc, or Quit CO and re-run it, the result is unpredictable. The Manual Grid view may be the same as I left it, some of the "corrected" thumbnails may switch back to the incorrect one, or even occasionally I have seen it change in sequence ALL116 thumbnails to that of yet a different photo! Some times a large section of the grid has one incorrect preview and the rest of the grid a different incorrect thumbnail. (Excepting of course at least the real photo has it's correct thumbnail)
This does not happen with Nikon raw photos, but does with JPEGs and HEICs. Happens even if the JPEG was created by using CO to export the JPEG from a Nikon raw photo, or if the HEIC was created from this JPEG using Apple's Preview app.
I have tried looking at the Catalog contents and deleting the COP file of thumbnails and also exercising the "Regenerate Previews" CO function. Also ran "Verify Catalog . . ." in the FILE menu.
I have been struggling with this for months and am waiting for a response to a CO "Request". The other "Thumbnail Problems" on this forum are significantly different from this one.
ANY help would be appreciated. Too bad I can't add screen shot to this post

Too bad I can't add screen shot to this post
You can. Take your screenshot, then click this button at the top of the window where you are writing your post.
Then navigate to your screenshot and select it.
(Note that attached images are limited to 2MB (per image, not per post) so you may need to resize it if it exceeds that. When that happens to me, I find the Preview app a quick and easy tool for the purpose.)

Here are some screenshots that show the CO behavior mentioned in my original post.
Here's 20 jpegs I just freshly imported into a new CO Catalog. Sorting is manual
Then, without any editing, I quit CO and re-run it. After the catalog loads and I wait about 5 seconds, the grid view becomes this. Note that virtually all the thumbnails are black, incomplete, or just wrong in that they show the thumbnails from one or more of the OTHER 20 photos!
If I then click on each of the top-row of thumbnails and wait a second or two for each, they do change to the correct thumbnails.
Sometimes, I'll just be staring at the screen and suddenly most thumbnails flip to yet a different incorrect or duplicate thumbnail (somewhat like the first two rows and the two bottom-rows). You can imagine how frustrating it is to have to click on each thumbnail again and wait a couple seconds to make sure it's actually the photo that the thumbnail claims it is - realizing you might have to do that all over again in a minute or two!
This thumbnail-flipping behavior happens frequently when changing "sorting order" (e.g., Manual to By Name and back again), by quitting and re-running and sometimes when I just sitting watching!
I've observed this with some jpegs but never with my Nikon NEF photos. But when I use CO to export my NEFs as jpegs, the problem even exists with CO's own exported jpegs! So it's not just these jpegs given to me by various people at our wedding.
I've tried importing these jpegs into other programs (such as Apple's Preview) and re-exporting them as jpegs or HEICs - but the problem remains.
Also tried using CO's "Regenerate Previews" and tried changing the preview size to non-default sizes.
I'm running the latest software (Sequoia 15.2 on a 2023 MacMini Pro & Apple Studio Monitor; CO is ver 16.4.5.29). If anything, the problem has gotten worse with each new CO version over the last couple of years.
I filed a "Request" with CO on 1/1/25 but have not heard back.
I'm at my wits-end as to where to go from here???

This sounds like it could be due to a corrupt catalog. Have you tried repairing the catalog?

Jerry - Thanks for your response. "Verify Catalog" says the database is OK.
Here's an example with many of the same images shown previously plus a few additional ones.
Screen 1 Immediately after opening the catalog
Screen 2: Here it is just a few seconds after opening without me doing anything except the Screenshot 1 above. Note how the lower two thumbnails are now incorrect. Note CO is in "Manual" sort.
Screen 3: Now I've re-sorted by "Sequence ID" and almost all thumbnails are incorrect
Screen 4: Back to "Manual" sorting and all thumbnails still wrong.
