In Capture One, you don't import pictures by connecting the camera directly. it doesn't support that because Capture One can used tethered capture (with cameras for which that is supported). It thinks that connecting a camera means you want to do tethered capture.

You have a couple of choices:

    (1) put the card from your camera into a card reader connected to the computer and import from that.

    (2) Transfer the images to the computer from the camera using some other feature of your OS, and then import to Capture One from whatever folder you transferred the images to.

I find method (1) the easiest.

Yeah thats what I ended up doing. Going to have to switch to using the sd instead of the cf card as the main card for the camera since no cf slot in the mac. At least till I buy a reader. Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately C1 is not allowing import of images directly from camera, so buying card reader is definetely worth it.
I would rather recommend to stay away from SD cards if you extensively shooting in series. As d810 buffer is eaten fast by LARGE 38 MP RAW, so still CF gives so much more juice and perfomance compared even to fastest SD cards.
