Sessions and catalogs RAW conversions are identical. Sessions just allows you to navigate to certain folders.

If you want to use LR as a Catalog you will want to use Sessions in C1.

To do it this way, first create a folder either on your desktop or wherever you like. Call it LR Pics.
Next, open C1 and create a new session, name it something like LR Session.
Now while in that session, go to the first tab (the one that has the folder icon) and find the LR Pics folder that you created earlier. Open that folder. Quit C1.

Now what you will want to do is create a a custom export preset in LR.
In this preset, your export location will be the folder you created earlier.
Set the Image Format to original.
Post Processing is set to Open in Other Application
And of course your Other Application will be C1.

What will happen is LR will create a copy of the RAW file and send it to this folder.
C1 will open in the last session that you were in, navigate to that folder and now you can edit the RAW.

Since you are using LR as a catalog, the variant issue is easy.

    In C1
Create a recipe and call it Gold Fibre Silk.(Or whatever paper profile you are using)
In the ICC profile of the recipe, find the profile you will be using.
Now in the output naming, just use image name, then add the token Recipe Name
Now it will add "Gold Fibre Silk" to the original file name.

Goto view,Proof Profile and hit Selected Recipe
What this does is set the profile to whatever your recipe uses.
This can be frustrating if you forget this setting. I sometimes get aggravated because my pics are washed out looking.
Turns out I have the Canvas recipe ticked. 🙄

Now all you have to do is create a different recipe for each paper you use.
Just remember to save as a Tiff or Jpeg. You can try DNG but i'm not sure how well that would work.

Also for added convenience you can set the Open With in the recipe to Lightroom.
Then LR will open to the import module and there ya go.
