It would be a good idea to include some information about your computer (PC or Mac, RAM, processor power etc) because that could be a significant factor with your issue.

Running a 2017 iMac Pro with 3.2 GHz Intel Xeon W processor and 32GB RAM, my biggest catalogue has 43500 images, and it will add keywords to fairly large numbers of images almost instantly. At the moment it's regenerating previews for the entire catalogue (a much higher power requirement than adding keywords) and it tells me it'll take four hours.

I don't have a lot of faith that it will actually complete the task (I tried it before) but we'll give it a go.

However Capture One was very slow, I wanted to add a location keyword to 500 images and it took 40minutes, while preventing me to do anything else in C1 in the meantime. I tried again after restating my computer and the results were the same. I was wondering if this kind of behaviour is classic in C1? I saw on forums and reddit that C1 isn't optimal for large catalogs but I only read about problems on catalogs much larger than mine.

No that does not sound like a typical processing time. Not close. I would expect a few seconds normally - at most.

No matter what your system I suggest trying a couple of full re-boots consecutively (it can help the system to clear out a backlog of old data in the temporary files area and cache) and trying again.

If you still have problem you could look at the log files or, if doing that sort of analysis is in no way your thing, create a Support Case and get some assistance from the C1 Support Team.

    HTH.

In fairness, I feel I should mention that since I posted this about an hour ago, Capture One has regenerated nearly 20,000 Previews - and now estimates it will take about an hour to regenerate the remaining 23,000!
    Oh me of little faith!
