C1 Session Workflow with Photo Mechanic or C1 Catalog only
I have some concerns and questions regarding the use of a session in "browse" mode on an existing picture library.
I am new to C1 Pro and I migrated only recently from a Photo Mechanic (PM) - Nikon Capture NX2 workflow.
I have an existing RAW picture library which I created dynamically with PM on card ingest using the following scheme: YEAR/YYYYMMDD/Event or location. I used to cull and keyword my images with PM and derawtize them with NX2.
Now, I would like to know whether I can continue to use PM for ingesting, culling and keywording my images and still be able to exploit all the features of a Capture One session or I can drop PM alltogether and do everything under Capture One (via a Catalog approach).
With PM, I used to apply a tag to all my ingested keepers, set a filter to the untagged images and remove them. Would it be just as fast and efficient to do likewise in C1 One?
At the moment, to work with PM (my picture library) and Capture One, I use a default Capture One Session in "browse" mode. By "browse" mode, I mean that I navigate my picture library without importing images and process my keepers with Capture One one at a time folder per folder.
I noticed that when I browse a folder with images, C1 One synchronizes the images and creates a Cache and Base Settings folder in the current image folder. If I work this way, am I getting the full benefit of session mode? I mean is it the same as importing images into a session?
The end part of my workflow would be to use process recipes to output jpeg and tiff images in separate web and print library folders by exploiting recipe names and other metadata at the process stage.
What do you recommend? Is it also possible to create folders and sub-folders dynamically on ingest with C1 Pro using variables or IPTC data?
I do not want to stick to PM for ingesting, culling and keywording and I am ready to rely entirely on C1 Pro for my workflow as long as I can work in a fairly similar fashion.
Many thanks for your guidance.

In short, as a high-level overview answer to your questions:
- there is no harm in your current workflow of PM and CO8; importing images into a session does not add something special to images that you would regret later because you used PM for that
- I think that you can replace PM with all the bells-and-whistles CO8 has for file creation; I find the metadata handling of PM still superior and although you can consider me a long-time Capture One diehard, it still does not replace PM for me (unfortunately).
I suggest you start experimenting with a CO8-only workflow and see what you come across.0 -
Many thanks for your reply Paul; quite helpful.
Since you are a certified professsional for C1 One Pro, you might know of a colleague in my current location, which is Switzerland (Lausanne area). let me know if you do.
