Migrate from lightroom (with NEF) to Capture One for Sony
Hello there, hoping someone can help me.
I have been a long time lightroom user on mac. I refuse to pay for their subscription model and their last stand alone version has issues on Catalina OSX. So its time to move. I want to move to capture one for Sony as I have an a6500 that I love. However, my library in lightroom is mostly based on NEF files from when I used to shoot nikon. I cannot afford capture one Pro full version but am wanting to purchase the capture one pro for Sony.. however I want to migrate these NEF files over. Now I do realize that CO will import them just fine, but that I cannot edit the NEF files. I dont want to lose that ability although ill likely never shoot NEF again. I tried to export some NEF files to DNG hoping that would solve the problem but alas, no luck, still cant edit them (even in CO 20).
So, is there some way to migrate my NEF library to CO for Sony other than exporting everything to jpeg? I guess I could export to TIFF but that would take a ton of storage. Im not trying to cheat the system here.. I realize if I purchased the full version of CO pro it would solve my problem.. but I simply cannot afford that as a hobbyist and only shoot sony now.
Thank you.

Hi, I think you assess the situation quite right. For the functionality you prefer, you need the full Pro version. For your budget, you are limited to NEF in read-only mode and full functionality for your Sony raw files.
My suggestion to you is to go for Capture One Pro 20 (for Sony) now. If you later acknowledge that you really need to adjust and process your NEF files, you can decide to upgrade your license to full Pro, assuming you can save some money over time. The upgrade price is not much higher than the price difference between both products.0 -
Thanks Paul for your answer.. appreciate it.
So I suppose for those NEF files that I just cant live without the ability to edit etc, I could always export to jpeg (high quality) or TIFF and go from there? I realize ill lose the RAW info which is too bad.. I was hoping DNG was the answer.
Again, its just a big lift from $99 for lightroom to much more than that for full capture pro.. just a hobbyist..
THanks again.0 -
Hi,
I won't recommend to go from NEF to jpeg, but rather to TIFF (16 bits), as you won't lose much flexibility when compared to jpeg (compressed, 8bits). And to export to TIFF only the NEF files you are really interested in for a further development in C1.
