Catalog size?

If I'm storing my photos outside of the catalog itself, is there a practical or recommended limit to the number of photos within the catalog? Is there a large performance difference between a large and small catalog when images are stored elsewhere? I recently migrated a fairly large catalog from Lightroom (~80k images) and am wondering if there are performance reasons to break it into smaller ones?
I primarily use a PC for my processing, and that's where this big catalog resides.

  Is there a better place to ask this? I didn't want to put it in one of the OS specific forums since I use C1 on both my PC and my Mac and this question doesn't pertain to any OS specific functionality..

  It seems that the answer is that it depends on your hardware. Smaller catalogs may be better.
