how to migrate to new CO 12
dear All
I almost forgot how painful can be CO software, I just bought the upgrade to CO12- I was using CO9 - and what a surprise: CO12 is brand new and all catalogues stayed in the old CO9, that I can't access anymore of course, as I need to enter a serial (what serial) to access it
so do you pretend me to install all the catalogue manually ? no way to do it in a more likely 2018 way ?
Nice surprise and thank for you help

If you have an activation key you can somply activate V12 and all should be well.
If you have already done that you should be able to OPEN a catalogue by selecting it.
C1 will need to upgrade the catalogue to V12 specification but the contents will likely stay as V9 engine unless you choose to upgrade them at some point. This is normal and would have happened at V10 or V11 as well. You do not have to upgrade the edits and usual advice would be to leave them as they are for now.
C1 will make a backup of your Catalogue files(s) as and when you open a V9 version in V12 so that you can revert to the V9 version should you ever feel the need to do so. You can also run a V9 installation using your V12 activation key.
If you installed V12 in its own folder you could have both V9 and V12 installed at the same time. If you have Upgraded V9 and overwritten its installation you would need to re-install it if you wanted to use it.
You could also run V12 in trial mode and it should work with your existing catalogues. However if you has accidentally activated it in DB mode or one of the free options for Sony or Fuji you may not see the results you expect.
Without knowing which OS you are running it is a little difficult to offer any further advice on a User to User forum.
Tell us what you did to install V12 and someone may be able to identify what is required to solve your problem.
Alternatively your could create a Support Case and get the C1 support team to help you.

well thank you for your reply, but unfortunately:
c1 v12 doesn't have any catalogue (it' empty), so i imported one , but it imported it in the pc local hd (all photos and catalogues are in the same external hd), so now is full have to back up and delete everything.
c1v9 and c1c12 are installed in the same folder, but the older require a p/w otherwise no access
honestly at this point it's quite a mess0 -
I think you may have misunderstood what to do. You should be able to open Capture One 12. It will have no recent catalogs or sessions at first. But you can go to the File menu, choose Open... and navigate to your old v9 catalog. Then as Grant (SFA) says, v12 will tell you that it has to convert it to the new format. (That is OK because it keeps a backup of the old v9 version of the catalog.) Don't try to use the Import function!

In my case whenever I install a new version I create it in a new folder so that the previous version still exists and is completely unchanged in theory.
In the File Menu if I select 'Open Recent' I see the same list as I would have done had I opened the previous version. (Windows 7 in my case).
I use sessions but I have a couple of catalogues lying around for testing and assessment purposes and they also appear if they have been Opened recently.
Alternatively do as Ian3 has suggested.
When you open a previous version Catalog (or session) C1 will ask if you want to create a V12 version of it and you probably will if it is an active catalog. C1 will create a backup copy of the original version in case you might at some point find it useful and then convert the catalog database to include any changes that have been made to the data structure since the last version you were using for that catalog.
The edit information for the images "in" the catalog, whether managed or referenced, is not changed at that point. Just the catalog management database.
When you open the catalog (or session) and then open an image file C1 may ask if you wish to update the processing engine. You don't have to. It is not necessary to do so unless you wish to edit the image and add some changes only available in the new processing engine for the new version.
You can discover which engine is in use by looking in the Base Characteristics tool.
Per the Installation section note in the Release Notes document, C1 engines back to V6 are compatible with continued use, should you so wish, in V12. If you have images still showing older version engines they may need an intermediate conversion - but realistically you may be better off to simply start afresh and enjoy the potential of a brand new approach to older images.
