Tethering: setting do not apply to JPG, why?
Hi all, I am new to CO, please excuse my inexperience with the software.
I moved from Lightroom, and one thing I have always been doing while shooting tethered in studio for a client was to only transfer the jpgs to my Mac (and keep the RAW in-camera). I prefer this because I generally shoot a lot in a short burst, and RAW (42MP) is simply too slow, and take up too much space in my laptop. Therefore I was quite surprised to learn that in CO, when tethered, the JPG will not receive the styles I set, nor settings from the previous capture, like it could with RAW.
Do you think this is something Phase One potentially will change, or that tethering and send jpg is just a no-no around here? (RAW allow far deeper editing, of cause. I just simply think for preview purpose it slows down the workflow too much.) Thank you.

Its been this way as long as I've been using the program, not sure why they do it this way though it save me once from shooting jpg instead of raw when I noticed the settings weren't transferring over. 0 -
Full tethering means that, in so far as the camera boy allows, the internal camera processes are by-passed to allow faster operation and more comprehensive remote control with settings via C1 that are not available from within the camera.
The alternative is to connect the camera to the computer, download the files - both RAW and and in-camera processed jpg if desired - and set up C1 to act as an editor monitoring a hot folder. That way your JPOG woould be available with the in-camera settings applied but you would have the overhead fo transferring 2 files and the speed of that activity will depend on your camera to computer comms speed. Not usually super fast with older cameras but be ok with more recent ones.
Looking at the RAW file in the computer may, if supported, use an internal jpg with camera settings applied as the preview file but but C1 will be processing the RAW with its own engine and so the camera settings are not relevant in that respect. There are some exceptions - Fuji Film styles for example in C1's case - but they are not applicable to bodies from other manufacturers.
Of course you may create some presets and styles within C1 that emulate the settings you use in camera for the jpgs if you wish but whether that beats using the out of camera jpgs without bothering about the RAW files or using the Camera manufacturer provided software to apply the available manufacturer's styles after the event is something worth assessing if the camera's settings are what you want anyway.
There are quite a lot if things to consider. However if you are absolutely certain that you want fast availability of the OOC jpgs then full C1 controlled tethering may not be the answer you seek - unless you are using Fuji and their Film Styles.
HTH.
