Selecting/De-selecting Ratings

    Yes, that is frustrating.
    I have been similarly frustrated.

I think this will help, though.

First, to affect more that one image at a time, you need to click on the toggle for either 'edit primary' or 'edit all selected variants'. This toggle button is in the menu bar and looks like three overlapping squares. When it is orange/enabled, any changes to one variant will be applied to all other variants selected at the time.

When you no longer wish to make adjustments that affect all selected, turn this toggle off. For instance, if I have two images selected and am viewing them in the.. viewer, I turn this toggle off so my changes are made to only the variant I have highlighted (focus with thick white border). The second variant selected and viewed but not highlighted will not not affected by my edits.

Second, you can copy onto the clipboard all the changes you would like to apply to all selected variants. Now, the variant you copy these settings from may have changes you do not want to propagate to the other variants.. you may not want to copy all the metadata (let alone edits!) to the other variants so don't use the 'copy adjustments' and 'apply adjustments' shortcut buttons.

Instead, go to the Metadata tool tab (circle around an 'i' for infos) and click the double headed arrow in the upper right of the tool tab. A pallet will pop up. This pallet has check marks next to all the metadata attributes you have modified for the image. Likely, you will only want to copy the stars rating. So, uncheck/deselect all the things like color tag or city or etc. You will be left with only the rating check marked... At the bottom of this pallet, click 'copy'.

Last, go to the 'adjustments menu' and select 'apply adjustments'.
    Should be done.
If something doesn't look correct, immediately click 'undo'.

In addition to going to the 'adjustments' menu, copied adjustments can be applied using a keyboard shortcut or a menu icon that looks like an arrow pointing down and to the left.

There is a menu icon that looks like an arrow pointing up and to the right. This icon can be used to copy adjustments. The reason I recommended going to the Metadata tab and clicking the double headed icon: the setting you want to copy is on that tab and the double headed arrow is an easy way to open that pallet so you can deselect what you don't want to copy.

Excellent and thank you. That was exactly what I was after. I'm just used to Lightroom where, if you select all images and say press 1, then all images will get a rating of 1.

As Tan68 mentioned C1 has the option to toggle between edit all selected and edit a single image - a handy feature once one gets used to it. With windows there is a keyboard shortcut for the toggle activity - CTRL+Shift+E by default. There will be something similar for Mac. See the Edit drop down menu for information and another way to access the feature

The "standard" settings like star rating and colour can be applied instantly to all selected variants

1-5 will set the start rating. 0 will clear them.

For colours various keys are defined by default to apply the colours offered and "NumericKeypad0" will clear any colour flag set.

In Preferences under the "Commands" can be found the shortcuts currently defined. They can also be access form the Edit drop down menu using "Keyboard Shortcuts".

You can create and save your own modified (with some reserved key combinations that cannot be changed) set of shortcuts available using the keyboard. Several if you feel the need for them.

Useful to know about even if one is not planning to use them.

    HTH.
