Adding one variant to an album adds all variants – ?

When adding a variant to an album other variants of the same photo appear to be added too, and as far as I can see it's not possible to delete only one variant from an album. Is this correct? And if so, what do you do, if you want only one variant in an album? Am I missing something?

    You are correct, and not missing anything.
    If a variant is added to an album, then the image is added to the project which contains the album and all the variants of the image are in the album.

    Its not necessarily the most convenient way of functioning, but it Capture One has functioned like this for many years.

    The best way that I have found around this is to use a Smart Album.

    There are many ways to do this but I've written an Applescript to make it easier

    By the way, is there any way you can display the number of items in a smart album? Or is this only possible with regular albums?

    No there isn't - something to do with the processing overhead of calculating it continually for all your smart albums, apparently. But you can see how many there are displayed in the bar above the browser (top centre of the screen).
