Workflow to move to Catalog from Session based.
Hi.
I have a question for moving my photo files structures to Catalog.
Please have a read of this..
1. I generally select photos using import in Session - just I use single session and files filtered are stored in temp folder with folder name created in date the photos taken.
2. Then I stored these folders in the name of project.
So, directories structures look like this:
Top Project directory
- A project
-- 2013-03-02
--- files.
- B project
-- 2015-03-05
--- files
Initially it was designed to be recognized easily without using any other tools to access my photos..
Now I want to move those things to Catalog as I realised that the file search is not working for global based in Capture one.
My Ideal goals would be:
A. preserve the files' parent name at least - this is useful when I cannot use CaptureOne for some reason. I can traverse with directory name at least.
B. A project name should be converted 'project' or 'tag'. - I can do it manually..
C. All of files should be placed in external usb drive.
D. some of main projects should be synced in local to gain speed.
So new directory in External looks like
Mac
- SSD
- Some major project (synced with a folder in External hdd drive)
- External hdd drive
-- Photos
--- 2013
---- 03-02
-----files
So, I tried to solve this with several approach.
1. Import those files using import by setting 'Destination' to In catalog.
-> Unfortunately it creates directory structures for the day of importing not creation day of photos.
--> You can do some trick by using date with '/' in Naming-Format but still its parent is the import date not creation date.
e.g. today is 2018-09-02
2018
-09
--02
---0
----2013
-----03
------02
------- files.
Another option is that you can set 'Destination' to Current Location. Which means I need to rearrange all folders by date again and it might make me a mistake to lose project information..
Do you know any idea of solving this situation? And please also advise if you have experience of syncing local and External drive based on Catalog.
Thank you!

I'm mainly a sessions user too (but many sessions, not just one large one) but I am thinking of starting to use a catalog as well in view of the demise of Media Pro. So I don't have a lot of experience with catalogs, but I do know a little. It seems to me that you are over-thinking this.
If your files are not on the external drive yet, you could move your whole session to the external drive. (If all your files are on the external drive already, ignore the last sentence.) Once your session is on the external drive, can you not just create your new catalog (on the local drive) then use the Import Session command on the File menu? This leaves the image files where they are (it doesn't store the raw files inside the catalog). But it does import the settings (adjustments you have made, etc) and create previews that it stores inside the catalog.
When you import images into a catalog, you get a new entry in the Recent Imports section of Catalog Collections in the Library tool. But if that doesn't suit you, just ignore it. Scroll further down in the Library tool to the Folders section and you will see your existing folder structure which you can continue to use.
I'm not sure of the need to have some work stored locally to improve speed. Nearly all the time, Capture One in catalog mode doesn't have to refer to the original files. It works with the previews. You could even disconnect the external drive and carry on working. You'd only need to have access to the external drive when you wanted to export your work in some form because then Capture One creates your output (jpg file, for instance) from the adjustments stored in the catalog and the raw file stored elsewhere.

Thank you Ian.
But the thing is all files are not belonged to a session anymore. and, all directories are scattered to each projects.
I might need to add more information for main question..
After I tested the 'your existing folder structure ' , I realised that those structure cannot be modified easily(You can do it - delete directories and add/remove files inside, but, I have to resolve sync issue. It seems not to automatically detect the changes in CO 10, please correct me if i misunderstood). So it causes some issues when I want to copy directories to different project folders(as I sat those parent folder to represent 'project') or modify project folder name. So, I end up reached the solution - one single parent folders having date named structures and projects should be handled in CO level by using 'Album' or tag not naming on directory structure.... in catalog.
and, in terms of sync issue on local copy and external's, really thank you for advising it to me. I might need to test it again 😊0 -

The answer to that, I think, is to do all your moving of stuff within the Library tool of Capture One. That will physically move things on your computer but also keep track in the catalog of where they are.
And have you seen this webinar? It's all worth watching, but especially the few minutes from about 14m 30s in from the start.

I have been a Catalog user for about 4 years. I never use sessions. I came over from Aperture and was looking for a replacement and a bit better RAW file processing.
I am very happy with the quality of the RAW processing. The catalog is not as good as it was in Aperture. It is a bit slower but not unusable. I have everything keyworded with hierarchal keywords. I like to be able to find something fairly easily. When clicking "all files" in the catalog things do slow down but v11 is much better than the previous versions. If you are working in an album with just the files you want then the program is plenty fast. Remember to close the catalog when in a small album. It helps it start the next time much more quickly.
If you go with a managed catalog all your stuff is stored in the C1 catalog file. This can get quite big. In Aperture I use a managed library and started this way in C1. I changed my mind because I wanted to have access to my files outside of C1 and someday the catalog might be bigger than I have space for. You can easily go from managed to referenced and back or even have some of both.
I wanted to use an outside DAM to catalog and find files. I tried a few solutions. I liked Photo Supreme and I bought it after the trial expired. Once I bought it, the program would crash constantly and the developer had no clue why. I had purchased Media Pro a year or so ago but never really liked it. This June I had surgery and had lots of spare time recovering. I decided to install Media Pro again and learn it and use it. I kind of liked it. Then less than 2 months after I spent all that time getting it organized and learning it they drop it. I decided to just stick with C1 and live with it. I have had it for 4 versions now and each one there are improvements.0 -

Could you elaborate ? I can't see any difference. Everytime I open it seems to take the same time whatever previous state.
