Capture One Pro 20 really jittery when making adjustments
I have a 2018 15" MacBook Pro with the following specs:
Processor: 2.6GHz 6-core Intel Core i7
16GB of 2400MHz DDR4 onboard memory
512GB SSD1
Radeon Pro Graphics 560X
When trying to use Capture One, I keep running into the issue where using the sliders to make adjustments is just not smooth. It's seems as if the computer is trying to process and render the changes as I move the slider and can't. I've contacted Capture One about this issue before, and I can't seem to get a resolution. I've tried everything - I have the preview size set to the right resolution for my display (2880, and I've even upped it 3840 and 5120 with little to no change), Made sure hardware acceleration is on, and I even make sure I have no other programs running. The only way to get it even close to smooth is to download a special application on mac that forces it to use the discreet graphics card. For some reason, Capture One doesn't tell MacOS to use it natively. I'm a landscape photographer, and fine adjustments are critical to my work. The stutters and delays make it impossible to do that easily. I had this issue in Capture One Pro 12 and was hoping that Capture One Pro 20 would have some sort of fix for this, but it seems it doesn't. Is there something else I can do? I want it to work natively, and my mac meets the recommended system spects, so I don't understand why it doesn't work. Is this just normal behavior that I should accept and/or move on from? Is there something else I should be doing? I made a screen recording, but can't figure out how to upload here.
Thank you to anyone for their help!

Hi friedster,
A solution which worked for some people is to disable hardware acceleration (I don't know why, anyway).
Did you try it ?

Thanks!
I gave that a try, and it helped marginally, but still really "jittery". It's odd because no other program I've used (Lightroom, Photoshop, Affinity Photo) has this problem...0 -
When working with sliders, there are different techniques to move them.
One is to drag the slider. Another is to place the cursor in the value next to the slider and use the up and down cursor keys, optionally with the Shift-key pressed for larger steps.
Have you tried both and did you notice any difference?0 -
Same issue here - only since last upgrade. Disabling auto acceleration did not help. The lag seems not to apply to adjustments other than auto adjust and sliders. e.g. curves changes apply without lag. 0 -

I have, though using the arrow keys helps with small adjustments, I use and need the sliders to get a general sense of where it needs to be. It still shouldn’t be as laggy as it is especially when pretty much every other photo editing program is able to do this with no issue.0 -
Hi friedster,
I have a MacBook Pro much older than yours, with a 4-core i7 2.3 GHz, and I don't have any lag on the adjustment cursors with rather small size images (24 Mpix, about 24 MB), but there is indeed some lag when dealing with large size images, such as my TIFF from MF 6x6 films (about 50 Mpix and 200 MB).
So, my question is: what are your camera and image sizes ?

Hey Robert,
That's so strange. I'm shooting with a Fuji X-T2, which is putting out 24 megapixel raw files.0 -
I just upgraded to C1 20 and am having this problem. I am on a brand new Macbook Pro 16" with lots of ram and cores, had no issues on C1 12, and now that I've upgraded am experiencing a delay of multiple seconds for what I can only explain as C1 "rendering" my change for me.
Have turned off all acceleration but to no availe.0 -
Can you tell me what you meant by "The only way to get it even close to smooth is to download a special application on mac that forces it to use the discreet graphics card"
Are you using some other software to solve this issue ?

@krishnakotti - sorry I misspoke a bit. I can go into energy settings on my mac and disable dynamic switching of the graphics card forcing the computer to use the discrete card exclusively at the expense of battery life. To make this easier, I downloaded an app - gfxCardStatus - which lives in the menu bar and allows you to choose with one click whether to use integrated graphics only, discrete graphics only, or dynamically switch.

I am having this issue as well, or something very similar. Capture One 20 v13.0.2.19 on a 2019 16" Macbook Pro with max ram and hardware. There is a delay of sometimes a second or more when moving image adjustment sliders, or using the arrow keys to adjust the number values. Laggy, sluggish, painful.

I have been trying to follow up with Capture one Support on this for a long time, they just say that they cannot replicate the issue.
I am not sure if this will be fixed by capture One.
Jay, I have an idea which is to limit no of images in a Folder. I am thinking of having only 500 images (max) in a folder and see if I have the issue. Split Folder with a lot of images into multiple folders and see if that helps.

I have also seen this behaviour on my PC. Capture One 20 just seems so much slower than the older version. I have not changed anything from size of files to PC, just Capture One 20 seems inefficient. Not sure if they have changed the code for manipulation or what.

I believe I am having the same issue on a PC with Capture One Express for Nikon. I am running and AMD 3700x CPU and a Radeon RX 5700 GPU. I have 32 GB of 3200 MHz Ram.

FYI. This issue was only occurring for me on the HDR sliders. I disabled hardware acceleration for the display in the Preferences and it solved the issue.
