Folder structure when moving to C1 from existing LR catalog
I've finally decided to make C1 my RAW processor of choice, but am having trouble creating a sensible folder structure with my current image folder structure created with Lightroom.
From now on, with new shoots, I'm going to be importing with C1, but I'm also going back and working on old shoots and processing those files with C1. However I end up with a more complex folder structure than I should (I'm using Sessions), with, from what I've seen online, too many sub folders and a really big (file size) CaptureOne folder with Cache and Settings82 sub folders. Even with new shoots imported into C1 I'm having issues. Files are not populating the Capture folder, but are in the parent folder above that.
I really don't find the C1 youtube videos very helpful, so hoping someone can point me to a good resource on how to deal with the Library section of C1 when you already have files on the computer and those files are already organized.
My setup:
CS 8.3.2
LR CC 2015
Mac Pro, Yosemite.
All RAW files stored on a HDD named Working Studio, that only contains image files (Archived files stored on separate external HDD).
Catalog on Working Studio drive contains over 80,000 RAW files.
File structure is made up of a series of "bucket" or parent folders, setup like this:
Working Studio (a 5 TB HDD) > RAW_XX_Date > Job name > Raw files.
Once I have around a dozen Jobs in a RAW_XX_Date folder, I create a new RAW_XX_Date folder and put the next 12 jobs in that. It's pretty simple, but it works for me.
Additionally, I'd love to be able to import star ratings, keywords and IPTC metadata (copyright, contact info etc) from LR, but I can't seem to get C1 to read the .xmp sidecar files I've exported from LR.

I can't offer much regarding your folder structure because to be honest, everyone has their own way and you're going to have to figure out what works for you.
I can however help with your metadata issue. There's good news and bad news however.
The good news is that although (as I'm sure you're aware by now) Capture One won't pick up any of the raw adjustments you've made in Lightroom, however the keywords, ratings & colors are available.
The bad news is that Adobe (for some reason that I can't fathom) doesn't follow the standard when it comes to IPTC metadata so your color labels will be there, but they'll all be wrong. Which is to say, colors will be assigned but if you tagged something White in LR, it will show up as Green in C1 (and nearly every other raw processor). Not much you can do about it unfortunately.
Star ratings, thankfully, should all be in tact.
To make this happen, you need to open up the Capture One preferences window, click Image, and then set the "auto sync sidecar" option to "Load".
By default, C1 doesn't read or write metadata to a sidecar file (it uses its own proprietary format) and it's pretty irritating. However I'd recommend that you avoid having C1 write sidecar files by default because it tends to slow down tethered capture pretty significantly.
You can force a save of the metadata (like LR's CMD+S) by selecting the desired images then clicking the metadata tool tab -> tiny drop-down menu -> Sync Metadata.
Super annoying o have to do it that way, but that's where things stand.0 -
It's pretty much straight forward when it comes to folder structure. If you have your own system you can set it up of course.
The folders created like selects trash etc you don't have to use them if you don't want to.

A screen shot maybe ?
If you set the capture folder to be just that "capture" all files should be in that folder and not the root folder of the session.
As for the captureone folder that resides in the capture folder, it's tiny in comparison to raw files and its not a folder you need to care about either way.0 -

I'm probably not the oracle on this as I don't use meta data exchanges but I think if you also don't have a need for exchanges just set the drop down box to "None"
The check boxes only come into play, afaik, if either of the other options are selected. At which point I will dip out as I have never had a need to correctly understand the influences they may have.
