Faster upload for volume shoots
Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum. I have a concern. How do you speed up the performance of Mamiya Leaf in tethered mode when shooting high volume photo sessions (1,000 to 3,000 shots). I noticed that by the time I reach around 100 shots, upload to computer progressively slows down, specially when shoot continuously like in model shoots.
I use Mamiya Leaf on DF+ body; MacBook Pro 16gb, 500 SSD drive.
Would appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Mario

Hi Mario,
Maybe you like to share which version of Capture One your are on, and same for OS X, just for the record.
Do you store images on the internal disk? Does shooting to session differ from catalog (catalog should be able to handle larger quantities better).
You could check your preview size in Preferences, and lower it down a bit if set to the default (max) value. Also, you could check whether your RAM is in use after a few hundreds shots and whether a restart (of Capture One or computer) improves the situation.0 -
Thank you for the quick reply Paul,
Sharing some info that you requested:
I am in Capture One 7.1.2 and using OS X 10.9.5.
"Do you store images on the internal disk?"
Most of the time, I use internal drive. I have tried using external (non SSD), but the problem persists. I was thinking that maybe (just maybe), when the drive gets filled with data, the slower it gets. Haven't tried using several drives to divide the task though. So as not to burden a drive with too many data. The only problem with this is the client normally wants to review all files (thumbnails) at the end of the shoot. Dividing them in different drives can be a problem.
"Does shooting to session differ from catalog (catalog should be able to handle larger quantities better)."
Haven't tried this. From the training videos that I saw on YouTube, it looks like Session is best for me since projects that I do, are separate from project to project. I can try using Catalog next time and see if it will be faster. Thanks for pointing it out.

I never knew this. Thanks for pointing it out. I adjusted already to 1024. Will adjust some more when necessary.
"Also, you could check whether your RAM is in use after a few hundreds shots and whether a restart (of Capture One or computer) improves the situation."
I do this a lot (as suggested by my reseller). But does not really work. I only use CaptureOne during my shoots so the computer devotes everything to the software. I even go to the extent of removing the lens, camera battery and Leaf back to reset everything. This hardly works. Which brings me to my next point.
I notice that at times, the DF+ do not seem to recognize the lens (SK LS 80). The aperture in the camera monitor turns to "--". I wonder if this is related to the buffering problem. But the thing is, it sometimes happen the moment I put the camera battery in. At other times, in the middle of the shoot. Anyway, this might be another topic to discuss.
Thats all. Thank you for the help.

Hi Mario,
Some additional tips.
Catalogs: although catalogs are intended to work great for larger collections, you can easily use it in a day-to-day manner, like sessions. Note that CO8 provides more flexible catalog management like exporting to catalog and importing catalog into catalog.
A preview size of 1024 is too small. This will certainly slow down your system significantly. Set it to a value the size of your monitor pixels.
I suggest to update CO7 to the latest version. There has a lot of performance tweaking been done during the life cycle of this version. CO8 is by the way much faster than CO7, so you have perhaps a reason to upgrade (try 60 days next to CO7 to see what is does for you). A new update of CO8 (8.0.2) was just released today.0 -
Hi Paul,
Thank you for the reply. I tested the camera yesterday after adjusting preview to 1024. I was only able to shoot less than 20 shots when the camera got stuck for the rest of the shoot. The camera did not exhibit the F stop (just the "--"). And when it did, I pressed the shutter and I got the message "busy DB". I removed the lens and battery; also changed lens. But still, the camera did not work after putting back everything.
Today, I am making an experiment of exchanging the DF+ body to another body owned by the Distributor. I think he has the DF body (not DF+). I want to find out if it is my body that's giving me the problem or something else.
I will also download the C08 (8.0.2) and adjust the preview to my computer resolution. I have another high volume shoots tomorrow and Saturday. I hope everything works with the C08 and a different body.
I will let you know what happens.
Thanks,
Mario0
