Geotagging Images - Generating Previews (Windows)
Windows 10 / Capture One 11.1.1
When I import RAW images previews are generated. Once this has been done I use an external program to add GPS coordinates to the images (Geosetter which utilizes EXIF Tools). Capture One seems to notice that the original file has been altered and regenerates all the previews. Is there a way to prevent the regeneration of the images, or to delay the generation of previews until after geotagging?
I have thought about just using a file manager to transfer RAW images to the computer, then geotagging and then importing to Capture One, but that seems like a bit of a pain.

That is exactly what I do. I did not notice the double preview work being done. Strange. I have an appointment with some tulips later today so this weekend I'll be doing exactly that. I'll pay attention to this and see if I get the same thing (it is possible that I just didn't care:-). If I see something different we can compare settings and what's what. 0 -
It's not usually a problem but I just got back from a trip with about 1000 images and generating the previews takes a fair bit of time - really seems the second time is a bit of a waste when all I've done is geotag. 0 -
The cause of the preview regeneration is indeed the fact that the original file's modified date is after the preview's modified date. 0 -
I just completed my import into a new session and geotagged the images. I experienced no double preview generation delay.
I created a new session and imported the 41 images
I let the import and preview generation complete
I looked at a couple of images
I closed C1
I fired up Geosetter and imported my track and selected the images
I committed the GPS data
Shut down Geosetter
Fired up C1
No previews re-generated
Looked at some images
No previews re-generated
I verified that the GPS info was there in the metadata tab
I shut down C1
I verified that the .nef files had had their time stamps updated and they had *not* been. I noticed that while after the C1 import there were .xmp files. After the Geosetter run there were two for each .nef file; a .xmp and an .xmp_original. Could it be that Geosetter is update the .xmp file? It sure seems like that. The original xmp file has only my copyright update from the import and the .xmp file has all the GPS data in it.
Perhaps the difference is in how Geosetter is setup.0 -

Where is the information stored? In the RAW directly or in the *.xmp files
If in RAW directly, C1 always generate new preview.
Better way is store all this information into sidecar *.xmp files or if you need this directly in RAW then do this job first and after is done import images into C10 -
After geotagging I have 3 files for each photo - a NEF file, a NEF_original file and an xmp file. This is different than what you have Ian. The NEF file and the NEF_original file are pretty much the same size. That is a problem because of the extra hard drive space it requires. Hadn't noticed before but this appears to have been happening to all previous photos that I have geotagged.
I am going to have to spend some time and try to sort this out. Either I am using incorrect settings within Geosetter or am doing something else wrong.
FWIW the NEF_original file is always a few KB larger than the NEF file.0 -

Now this is a indicator, that you (geosetter) will store GPS information into RAW file. I never used this software, I strongly recommend that you check the settings and save the information into sidecar xmp files.0 -
I figured out my mistake and was able to restore everything to original nef's plus xmp sidecar files. Will pay a little more attention next time I use Geosetter. Thanks for help. 0 -
What settings did you have to tweak? I want to make sure mine never copies the .nef files either. It seems things were working for me because C1 created a .xmp file that Greosetter then modified. I just want to make sure that if there isn't a .xmp file it will create one. 0 -
In Settings>File Options I unchecked the boxes the said "Update existing data in images" and "Always update Exif data (GPS an taken date) in image". The following boxes are checked "Save data in XMP sidecar files" and "If IPTC Data Exists Already, Use It As Is (Unicode or Local Character Coding)".
I have not tested the new settings yet, so please don't assume that they are correct. If you notice anything that you are doing differently I would appreciate a heads up. FWIW already had to edit the above, so there is probably still lots to figure out. Geosetter seems to be a great, powerful program. The good side of this incident is that it got me into the FAQ and I am learning a little.
EDIT
I wasn't sure until I did some testing but I have now selected "Overwrite Original File when Saving Changes". This allows the sidecar file to be overwritten and does not create xmp_original files. It does not write to the original image file if the above settings are used. This may be of interest to you Ian.0 -
Thank you. I tweaked it so that I do not get the _original copies of the files. Since it is all in xmp side cars anyway a back up is not really needed. 0
