File Rename or Not
Watched David's Webinar "Managing images on the Road" and I have a few questions... BTW I'm a real Newbie so forgive me for what could be a simple question(s):
Current workflow is (using MAC):
-Using PhotoMechanic I copy images from Camera SD Card into folder on a raid drive folder name would be like: "2020_02_23_NameOfPlace". Using the Image file name created in Camera.
- PhotoMechanic is used to cull images (delete them completely).
- Import remaining files into LR, again not changing image names. edit etc...
Ideally I don't want to rename image files if possible. So my question is:
How does C1 handle two images with the exact same file name in the same catalog? The camera's image counter would roll around eventually, or when shooting a timelapse I often reset the image counter for every sequence, so they order properly in post. Would C1 not treat them separately since they would be located in separate file folders in Finder? David alluded to a problem that he had where an image with the same name from a long time ago popped into his selections, or something?
- Just starting to build a catalog and want to catch issues before I get too deep into the process.
Thanks .. Glen

I have come to realise the benefits of renaming files on import, even if only adding the date the image was taken.
What is your reason for not wishing to change the name allocated (repeatedly as you point out) by the camera?
I would always advocate renaming to something more meaningful but your apparent reticence has me wondering what you have identified that make you reluctant to do so.

Grant.. I guess it has to do with current workflow.. Will continue to use PhotoMechanic for import and culling, its the fastest thing I've ever seen (PM5 at least, ver 6 is slow on a MAC I haven't upgraded yet).. PM is used by most sports shooters for handling images at 1/2 time etc... I'm looking to tell Adobe to keep their rental wear and use a combo of C1 and Affinity Photo to replace LR & PS.
I would like to keep the file names as is, because it makes it easier to maintain my current backup method. I do some auto normalizing using a custom program that uses folders & filenames.. If C1 changes the name of my primary files I have to change current workflow. PM can use tokens also on import I think, so maybe that is the solution to create unique names...0 -
It does not matter what you use to make the unique file names - just don't leave them as the names that come from the camera.
IMO.

Some observations.
The OP is aware of potential conflicts of duplicate file naming in a collection of images, whether it is the software (Capture One) or else. File names coming from cameras are not unique by default.
The OP has its hands on the best file renaming software man can buy: Photo Mechanic. It works fully automatic.
Still, OP is reluctant to change file names...
Somtimes, the fix is far easier then the problem ever was.0
