ICC profiles
Hi, I have a few questions regarding ICC profiles, maybe you like to share your knowledge and/or discuss.
Question 1: For the Nikon D7100 I have two profiles to choose from, Generic and Generic V2. What is the exact difference?
Question 2: I have read somewhere a while ago (I believe in the image quality professor's blog) that it is quite difficult to make a good ICC profile.
Particularly, it would be impossible to make one single profile which fulfills the requrirements for both, color accurancy (e.g. for flat art reproduction) AND smooth and natural gradients for real world 3D objects at the same time, in the same ICC profile. It was said that this is always a compromise, a question of balancing this out.
I do not know why this is, (it would be interesting, though), but my question is:
Would it be possbile to have a simple slider (or tool) which allows to gradually set the degree of color accuracy for 2D vs. 3D accuracy?
Question 3: Or, put it the other way round: Which existing tool would the end-user use to achieve that?
All the best

Q1 answer
A V2 profile is most of the time a second iteration of an earlier profile or profiling. Simply but, a better profile. The first profile is there for compatibility (or in case you prefer the older one).0 -
Thanks Paul for answering question 1.
Does anybody have an answer or an opinion about question 2 (regarding a 2D vs. 3D slider)?0 -
I can answer my question 3 for myself: Colour editor, levels, curve etc.
What do you think about question 2?
Cheers

I would assume that it is not possible or someone would have done it already.
Or, to put it another way, it may be sort of possible but the results could be compromised beyond general acceptability.
On the other hand the advent of the lesser quality online image market where to some extent simplistic manipulations are considered acceptable or better there may indeed be an opportunity to create a one tool adjustment that will gain acceptance. It may however, need to be 3D. Something more line an orb than a wheel as a GUI concept.
Whether out brains could cope with that is another matter.
