I'd rather have 5 cheap cables than one nice one, but that's just me.

You're kinda paying for the go-faster orange colour...

I should have put "nice" in quotes.

It's harder to find long usb 3 cables than it was to get usb2, but I came across these guys the other day. I Wouldn't go over 10-15 feet without a repeater though.

Nothing to do with tethering as such and relates to experience on PC.

I have a "high speed" USB3 3mtr cable that works fine unless you want to connect to an external 4Tb drive that has gone into low power mode.

A 2mtr cable (not "Hi Speed") seems better.

Connecting to a USB2 port fires it up immediately every time.

I have a pair of these drives. They both respond in the same way.

I don't have any kit that can be tethered with USB3 so the disk info all I can offer but, if it is representative of USB3 as a whole, it is likely to be no less inconvenient for tethering unless handled carefully.

I'm guessing a hard drive needs a lot more power than a Camera.

The drives have their own power supplies

It seems the "wake up" signal (and possibly the "stay awake signal?") on a 3mtr USB3 cable is not effective enough compared to a 2mtr USB3 cable or any USB2 connection.

I would guess that the pure comms requirements of disks or cameras are much the same and would be covered by the port's specifications.

Very small effective differences - 0.1V or less, can be the difference between success and failure to communicate, or so it seems.

I have a couple of the longer tether tools USB3 cables - to be honest, I was drawn to the length and colour of the cable. I still prefer to use my shorter, standard USB 3 cables when doing tight, small studio work - but the tether tools definitely comes in handy when im shooting in a larger studio environment, or particularly if there is talent walking around that may kick or trip over the cable.

The only downside with the longer cable is that you need to buy the tetherboost pro to prevent drop-outs. It was pretty frustrating being on-set and not having received my tether boost yet. I had to pause several times during the shoot to resync my camera with the laptop.

I actually listed the tethertools USB cable in my Gifts to buy for photographers under $100 last Christmas. I've had a few people pick them up since then - some absolutely love the product, others aren't too phased and prefer just using their standard cables.

    I like to use both!
