It probably didn’t really destroy the catalog. It will have shown your recent import (the one file imported) separately. But your earlier imports should still be there. You should be able to see them in the Folders section of the Library tool, and in the All Images Collection.

What do you mean by the original group of pictures?

It sounds as though you need to find your way round the Library tool tab in a Capture One catalog.

At the top you should see Catalog Collections, including All Images, which is a collection of all the images in the catalog. Of course you can't move anything in our out of that - it is just what it says, all the images. Then below that in Catalog Collections you should see Recent Imports. A new album of imports appears each time you import images. Again you can't move images in or out of these - they are just albums of what they say, recently imported images.

The next section down is User Collections. You can create all kinds of albums, smart albums, projects and groups here.

Then under that you have Folders. These are the actual physical places where the images are. They can be "In Catalog" if you chose on import to store your image files inside the catalog itself. Or they can be in Folders in the file system on your computer. You can physically move images here if you wish. For instance you could drag and drop an image from a folder called Birthday to a folder called Anniversary. It would move on the disc but it would still be in the same Collections it was before. So for instance if your recent imports were on Monday and Tuesday, you could physically move one of the images from Birthday to Anniversary, but it would still be a Monday import or a Tuesday import.

If you have imported images on Monday and Tuesday to the same location on your computer, you won't need to physically move the file unless you want to.

Have you looked in the Folders section?

Also, have you watched any tutorials on how catalogs work?

I'd recommend this one: https://youtu.be/kXm7eI8YTyk - just over 4 minutes, quick overview,

and this one: https://youtu.be/nDJR4Zcd1Lw - just over an hour, in depth.

It doesn't matter that they are based on Version 12 - the principles of catalog organisation haven't changed.
