I never use the film strip at the side. You can turn it off when in Viewer mode, then just toggle between Browser (grid view) and Viewer with a suitable key. (I use §.)

Ctrl+B is the default shortcut to hide/view the Browser while Ctrl+T is the same for Tools.
The auto-hide feature discrepancy between Mac OS and Windows is coming from far far away in time (I think I've asked about it many years ago) and still I wonder why it's not possible to have it on Windows. It can't be the most difficult thing in the world to program.

    Aha - that's partially helpful.

Unfortunately the setting does not persist for me. As it comes back every time I switch between Viewer and large Browser with the (default) ctrl+alt+v hotkey.

This seems like buggy behavior. Is there any reason I might be missing that it's not?

It's not a buggy behavior. You need to use both the shortcuts alternatively thinking in terms of what you want to hide. Hiding the browser will show the viewer and hiding the viewer will show the browser.

So, if you hide the browser and then you want it back you press Ctrl+B again, but if you want to switch to large browser (hiding the viewer) you have to press Ctrl+Alt+V.

Similarly if you have only the browser on screen (you hid the Viewer with Ctrl+Alt+V) and you want to switch only to the viewer (hiding the browser) you have to press Ctrl+B. But if you want both you need to show the viewer with Ctrl+Alt+V again.
