Just go back to the background layer.

As Ian has written, most tools in C1 if they are being used for a single edit not a copy and paste activity, are applied automatically. No need to tell C1 that you have finished editing - just go on to whatever you want to do next.

There are a few that are different because you are making adjustments that have different requirements for user interaction.

Historically the most obvious one has been Keystone Correction.

Also LCC profiles - but that is a rather special situation more like a copy and paste requirement.

Recently, in V11, the enhanced Layer functions for Refining and Feathering existing masks have also been designed to have an Apply function that makes the change.

I assume this is partly because the performance overhead potential for repeated frequent adjustments when using high resolution monitors is considered to be excessive if run continuously when making this sort of adjustment. However it may simply be that everyone involved with the development and testing just found that it was an easier way to work for that particular requirement.
