New Macbook pro?
My loyal macbook is starting to be too slow for me (Mid 2010) and it's time for a new one but I'm a bit worried about buying the new macbook pro that has only thunderbolt connections and no ability to upgrade in the future.
Does anyone has the experience of tethering and working with it?
Is working with adaptors and duplicators stable enough?
I'd love to hear some opinions from personal experience

It's kind of a hassle and I can't recommend it right now unless you absolutely have to make the jump. (Especially since it rumors indicate that Apple will be releasing ANOTHER MacBook Pro later this year / early next year that is actually a little more performance driven rather than being just as light as possible).
When OWC finally releases their dock, I'll be getting it immediately - because USB-C is super annoying right now.
There are different KINDS of USB-C cables and USB-C ports. Some are for charging only, some support data transfer, some support data and video, some work as Thunderbolt 3 and they aren't all backward compatible to USB 3) and a few different sorts of USB 3.0 to USB Adapters - and after all of that it still seems necessary to use powered USB hubs to maintain voltage for tethered shooting.
Thunderbolt 3 will be pretty killer in terms of speed when it's full support, but it's not really ready for prime time just yet. I'd stick with USB 3 as long as you can.0 -
You might want to check Activity Monitor and look at the memory pressure. You might be able to squeeze another year or two out of it by upping the memory to 16GB and memory for old machines isn't expensive. Assuming you're not already at 16GB of course. 0 -
I just had the same 'dilemma' and decided to go for the MacBook Pro (mid 2015) model which comes with 2 thunderbolt2, 2USB2, and SD card reader (the model without the new touchpad) and added the CalDigit Thunderbolt2 hub thru which I run my USB3 devices and Gigabit ethernet. So far it works like a charm and I am very happy... ( I was not willing to 'ditch' my entire inventory of peripherals)
Btw, the SD card slot I filled with a 512GB SD card that is flush with the housing and gives me a second internal hard drive.
Capture One runs just fine on my system...
Just a thought!
PS, I forgot, it also has a HDMI slot that houses my BenQ SW320 31.5" 16:9 4K Color Accurate IPS Monitor. So, if I want to go 'tethering' I just unplug 2 cables, the monitor and the CalDigit hub and I'm good to go...0 -
I got the 2016 macbook pro / touchbar speccced out. Used it on several shoots with ZERO problems, with two eizo monitors / 10m Displayport cable, using from Canon 1DX / MK III / MK II to Phase One IQ250 with the most stable connection I've ever had on a machine.
Running a single dongle - https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/USB-Hubs/Ank ... +hub+anker
I do have about 10 others just in case, but I find it hard to run out of ports, always had at least 2 spare even on location and running backup drives.0 -
You're going to see a massive speed bump, so I'd just bite the bullet and upgrade and get a powered hub to deal with the cables. 0 -
I've used a variety of Apple adapters over the years (and still have two installed) they have always been stable and reliable.
For my iMac I have installed a a CalDigit Thunderbolt 2 Doc to get more ports of various types, this is working with no problems.0 -
what harddrives are you using with new macbook for backup during shoot ?
the lacie has a usb-c but only with one port, liked the older ones with a back up secondary port0 -

Is there a adapter for the charger yet though? I can see how the dongles for USB is easy enough.. But what do you do for location battery? Is there a fix/workaround for Hyperjuice et.al batteries yet?0 -

Yeah hyper juice do an adapter, its a little box that connects to the usual round port to the hyperjuice, then use your usual USB C charging cable. Works flawlessly!0
