Working with Styles
I have just started working with the Capture One styles packs. They are super high quality, my only issue is the names are useless to know what they will do. FL-01 what does it do? Does it warm or cool? This wouldn't be an issue if there was a style gallery, so you could quickly see what all the styles will do. Its a bit painful to have to go through every style one at a time. If you find ones that you like there is no way of building a favourite styles group for yourself. Also in the Styles and Presets tool if you right click on a style there should be an option to apply it to a new filled layer.
Don't get me wrong I think styles are great, they could just be easier to use.

Given that Styles can be considered as a starting point not just a destination have you considered saving them as User styles with whatever name you want to use for them.
Preferably a short name. To see why I mention that, try a long name or two as a test to see what you think when you call the new names up ready to browse and select from the list.

you can organise your styles into folders. I have a bunch of folders for different clients and then warm/cool etc. The default folder that styles are saved in are at /Users/USR/Library/Application Support/Capture One/Styles. replacing USR with the name of your user.
You can also rename them in the finder.0 -
I have the same issue as the OP. Since a few weeks I've been experimenting with the Spectrum, Seasonal and Cinematic Styles and I must admit I quite like them but I find them rather confusing too. Especially the naming convention which offers no reference at all.
My workflow now is, after I performed the basic adjustments I browse through the Styles one by one to find the one that suits the picture best (which is very time-consuming) and then apply it. After that I fine-tune the Style and finish off the picture.
What I would like to find is a kind of reference for the different styles, so I can narrow down the trial and error methode I use now for selecting a style. Maybe a showcase of the styles (before/after) or a description of what the style does or what situations it is best suited for.
I've been browsing the web but haven't found anything suitable. Even the Phase One website is a little sparse with showcasing the styles.
All suggestions are very much appreciated.

Okay so this being Cyber Monday, I took the bait and ordered a style preset pack - the pack I ordered included film simulations. I was expecting to find styles with meaningful names (e.g., Astia, Velvia, Acros etc) yet the film simulation styles are named FL-01, FL-02 etc. How am I supposed to determine which simulation represents which film? That's what I was expecting to see when I ordered this style pack.0 -
I have the same problem with styles and the experience approve with just a few changes:
- browse the styles with the keyboard, up and down arrows with a modifier? (i couldn't find a way to do this. please correct me if I'm wrong)
- a quick way to pick favorites styles for a session or album (also per shortcut if possible)
- I find the cursor hoover preview too annoying and also it combines styles if you accidentally click on a style.
CO is advertising the styles a lot. I bought already two packages but I am avoiding them only because it is so hard to browse and compare them.0 -

I wonder if there are some things that might be available that would offer some immediate relief for your problems.
For the first point - If using the drop down Adjustments menu route my Windows 7 system allows me to use the styles folder structure via the keyboard arrow controls. Is that not a commonly available feature? Using the Styles and Presets tool is different as it uses a click option to set an enable or disable tag.
For the third point, second part - do you have the "Stack Style" option set to be active? Turning it off would not stop the application of a style but should stop more than one being applied. And there is CTRL-Z to undo an accidental application. Also using the arrow keys - is possible - should eliminate the chance of an accidental selection.
For the second part things are a bit trickier.
Assuming it is worth the effort for the amount of editing expected I would suggest creating a folder, perhaps named for the session is you want to keep it for future reference, in the Styles folder and copy the chosen styles to it.
I would guess it should be possible to simply load a style and then save it as a User style should you wish to do it through C1 rather than at the file management level but either way should work.
Doing that would give you a quick way to get to just the limited number of styles you want to use for a particular session.
To further reduce the level of cascading menus but on less obviously session oriented basis, one could simply ensure that all styles, except the ones for which one wants quicker access, are in folders in the Styles50 folder. Also, of course, that the Styles one does want more rapid access for are available directly in the folder.
If you are using User styles or style packs they should all be on one place. The "Built In" style delivered with a C1 installation are stored elsewhere in the file system but could be copied to the User Styles location if required.
Certainly a more elegantly managed solution would be nice but this idea could be actioned in a couple of minutes and so offers some potential for an immediate benefit.
So far as I know there is no option to allocate a style to a keyboard short cut for deployment and frankly I'm not sure it is a practical option for a general feature. If you are using a Mac might there be a possibility to do something with Applescript? I suspect people would have different ideas about how it might work for their particular needs.
Hopefully you will find some of these ideas useful in developing your own workflow without having to wait for potential development activity before seeing any benefits.
